Story: Someone at work was selling Craftsman toolboxes that were new but damaged (just a few small dents). The one I picked out is here:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00965362000&subcat=Chests+%26+Cabinets
When I first went to look at it, she didn't have the model number, so we looked it up in the Sears catalog and we thought we found a match with one that cost $420. We agreed upon a price of $300 for the one she was selling.
I have already paid for this box and I picked it up last night. I looked it up again on the website this morning to show it to a co-worker, and I found out that I had original picked the wrong box out of the catalog. The original price wasn't $420, it was only $350.
I'm debating on sending her the following e-mail to see how she responds:
Hello,
I just wanted to let you know (not that it matters now) that I did manage to find the toolbox that I bought from you on their website:
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00965362000&subcat=Chests+%26+Cabinets
It's the only 11-drawer box that they offer in that size.
Good luck selling the last one!
Do you guys think I should send it and see if she mentions the price, or just not bother?

send it, you still got a good deal. saving $50 because of a few minor dings is fair.
the worse thing she can do is say that you made the deal and stick to the price you already got, best thing she coudl do is offer a little bit more off to be "fair" about it.
either way you got a pretty good deal on it.

Im with Tim, whats the worst she can say. I mean you can probably even fix the dents if you really wanted to take the time to do it. Still a fair price. Put some Summit, Jegs or whatever stickers over the dents and youre as good as new.

I say send it, why not. What part number are they? Do you think she'll sell me the rest for $250?

I would send an email saying that it wasn't the model that both of you thought it was. Then show her which one it ts and the price to see if she offers you a discount or to return your money. Just make sure you point out that both of you thought it was a different model. I just ran into a similar situation over a compressor. The people thought it was a more expensive model but I eventually found out what it was and they were bummed it was worth a lot less.

I think this may be the best way to approach it. I'll just add a line in to the e-mail saying that we both thought it was the wrong one. If she offers a discount, great, if not, oh well - I still paid $50 under retail.

Oh well, she's acting like she doesn't want to budge on the price.
I guess it was worth a shot. Now I just have to get the key from Sears and start loading up all my tools :)

Nope, I picked the only one that she didn't have the key for (she had four altogether).
Her son picked up a bunch of damaged Sears merchandise for one lump sum, and they are selling it all off. At least that's the story I got and it sounds good enough to me.

50 bucks off is close to what my discount would have been, so I say good deal.

Hey Al, can I show up at the local sears and grab a key from them, or do I have to find time to call them in the middle of the day to order one? I have the code from the lock already....

probably can call your local sears and they can have one either shipped too you or to the store for you to pick up. Im not sure how that works. They do have lock replacements in the store, they might just give you one of thoes.

I think you should fix your Camaro and get it running, then put the new tool box in the trunk for emergency tools.

Yeah, but what if he locks the car keys in the toolbox in the trunk?

....and lose the best lawn ornament on the block? I don't think so mister.
The toolbox is just a way to actually put the several hundred dollars worth of tools that are boxed up in my basement to good use (like fixing the car).

I may fit in the car since the rear sets are out. It's 26.5" wide, 18" deep, and 41" tall.

Update:
I got the keys for the box in the mail on Saturday. I was all excited, so I ran straight out to the garage to open up the box and starting filling it with tools. Slide the key in, turn the lock, nothing.....WTF. After checking it, I realize that the lock cylinder is turning way to easily for the locking bar to be moving. This morning, another e-mail sent to the lady I bought it from:
Hello Denise,
I have a problem. I finally received the keys for the toolbox from Sears in the mail on Saturday, however the lock is broken. I have the correct keys, and they turn the lock just fine, however the lock cylinder does not seem to be connected to the actual locking bars in the toolbox at all. I think it may have been damaged when it was dropped or hit to get those dents that it has.
I do realize this is not your fault, as you didn't have the keys to test the toolbox, however it was sold to me as a working toolbox that just had a few dents and was missing keys, which is not the case.
What do you think we can do about this matter?
Response:
Do you know the model number? Is it the same model number that you sent me that time on the site?
I'm sorry about the chest. I can't believe the darn lock won't work. Did you get the chest opened at all or is it that broken that it doesn't open?
My reply:
It is this box, but in black instead of red. I don't know if the black one is a different model number or not.
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00965362000&subcat=Chests+%26+Cabinets
I haven't been able to get it opened at all. When you turn the lock with the key, you can feel that there is no resistance at all, so I would assume that the bars that slide to lock and unlock the drawers are not attached to the lock mechanism. I don't know of any other way of getting the box open.
And her most recent response:
Ok, thanks. I want to check something out and I'll get back to you.
I'm not quite sure what she is checking on, but I am pretty much determined to either get my money back, or at the very least get her to replace the box.

I say give the tool box to me JK find some one who bought the exzact same box and ask them to exchange it for you, or go to sears and ask for the box to be fixed and you are verry unhappy with the product but lost the receipt..

There's no way I could take it back to sears the way it is. For now I'm gonna hold out hope that this lady is gonna make things right. If she doesn't come up with something by lunch time tomorrow then I'll start pestering her.

go buy one at reg price, swap them, take it back the next morning and say it was damaged, get your refund

cause you got one for a discount, you buy one then return the POS one as its place, their for getting money back from the regular price not the discount...

he's not making money, he's simply exchanging.

If hes simply exchanging he wouldnt be getting a discount and would be loosing money..

Got a phone call from this woman this morning. She was on the phone with different people from Sears all day yesterday, and the best advice they could give to her was to brush the key with a wirebrush to see if that works. Know, I'm quite sure that this will not change a thing, but I'll humor them.
She said that if that didn't work, that she would give me my money back.
Al - Any way to get a discount on a nice ball-bearing box? ;)

i have a set up like that almost, i dont have the ballbearing drawers and ive had my stuff for nearly 10 years now, no issues whatsoever out of it. when i worked at sears i got all of my boxes at discounts since they were dented, i think for my whole setup i only paid liks $200 for it (and the boxes stacked up are just as tall as i am :) ) good luck justin!!

A few ideas:
1) List it in the For Sale section as Sear's light weight model and then sell it to Tim for $450 then buy the box you really want.
2) Instead of storing the tools use the tools and get the car running. Then you can put the tool box up on the jackstands as you work on it!
3) Instead of putting in your basement, put in front of your car so it doesn't roll down the driveway CAUSE YOU STILL DON'T HAVE BRAKES
4) No keys and dents, sounds like junk, I'll give you $10 for it. $15 if you deliver!
Seriously, doesn't seem like you are going to get any money back, you still got a deal.

How would you figure that? I paid $300 (+$15 for two keys) for a toolbox that is locked and won't open....
Should be giving the toolbox back this week and getting my money back though.

Latest News:
I spoke to my son last night about it. He said that brush thing was stupid that they told me and that wouldn't do anything. He said to turn the chest upside down and that will jar the lock open and all the drawers will open then and you can see what's going on with that lock.
Justin, if that doesn't work, last try, then I'll certainly refund your money back.
My son works for Sears and is a service tech. He knows a lot of stuff so give it a try and we'll see if he's right. I'm soooooooo sorry for all this inconvenience. I really thought getting the key was all you needed.
I was going to call you last night to tell you that trick but I don't have your telephone number any more.
If it works, she will offer a partial refund for all the trouble the box has been, if it still doesn't work, I'm returning the box for a full refund.
