Cars an A4 butyesterday i was driving on woodbridge ave in edison and i was driving. 1st gear was going fine, then 2nd was fine and i think in third or fourth gear it wouldnt shift. like it would feell ike i was in neutrul reving but moving a little. it would take a while to shift. friend said it might be the torque converter lock up or something like that. any ideas?

Is that what your were talking about last night?

could be a fee things, possible something as simple as a servo or something more involved, burn clutch bands etc. To me the torque covertor wouldn't be the problem from what you're discribing since it shifts fine 1-2.

What condition is the trans in? miles, last serviced. Hows the flid level, and the condition of the fluid? Should be pink/purple and not smell burnt.

And when did it happen? Engine hot or cold?

Sounds like the 3rd band is going...

Check the fluid... color, smell, level...

Theres no band for 3rd. The band is only for 2nd and 4th. Its sounds like your 3/4 clutches are shot. A bad converter clutch wont make the car rev like its in neutral. Its common for the 4L60e to burn up the 3/4 clutch pack. Sounds like its time for a rebuild.

The symptom you are describing is typical of the 3/4 clutches failing. This is very common in 700/4l60e transmissions. Time for a rebuild..

It's internal, one way or another you will have to pull it apart to find out what is wrong.

Winner....3/4 packs are toasty...rebuild time

my TV cable is loose and i dont know how to fix. there is no tension. i think it is unhooked next to tranny but not sure where to look

badzracing
01-17-2009, 02:39 PM
the tv cable is in the passenger side of the tranny roughly in the middle. There is a plastic tube with a 10mm bolt in it. The cable has a round piece with a "hook eye" and the shaft in the tranny is shaped like a question mark. However, TV cables rarely come loose in the transmission. It's more than likely broken. In any case, if you've been driving it like that for a while, your 3/4 packs ( as well as 1st and 2nd) are probably shot anyway. TV cables control line pressure in relation to throttle position. If you were driving it spiritedly with a broken cable, the transmission wouldn't have had nearly enough pressure and you probably noticed "shorter" shifts. You could try replacing the tv cable if it is indeed broken and see if it makes a difference, but my guess is it needs rebuilding.

Yes, I do think so....

For a GOOD trans from a known 4l60E builder, about $1500+ to your door. Then install yourself, or will need to take to a shop.

Not really, look at it as an opportunity to have the trans done the way you want.. Quicker, firmer shifts, stronger internals, a nice new converter with higher stall and better efficency. It will feel like a whole new car!

We can do the job here for you if you like. Just give me a call and we will set something up..

Thanks

I understand.. Just beware of quick fixes, they usually lead to a larger bill than if you just bit the bullet and did it right the first time..

This is in your 95 or your 1990?......I'm only asking because the '95 shouldn't have a tv cable...if it's the 1990, then disregard.

a quick fix only leads to more and more patch and go! in the long run your gonna end up spending the $ to get it fix the right way anyhow. i agree with js completely, re-build it and get yourself a good converter.

If it has TCS that its still only one cable to the TB....

Ok. You need to look at the lip right above the pan on the passenger side. There is a number stamped into the case...that number will tell you the year of the tranny. Also, on the driver side, look to see if you have a big round plug or a smaller squarish one.

i dont have traction control. on the performance button lol. there are two wires from my TB, throttle and kickdown. throttl on top and the kickdown on bottom. there is no tension in the kickdown.

have you checked to see if someone swaped in an older trans? if not you dont have tv/kickdown as mentioned several times.........

and you say you dont have t/c either, that other cable is probably cruise control

There is definitely no kickdown cable... If it's a 700r4 ( aka older than 1995....'93-down) it has a TV ( throttle-valve) cable. If it's a 4l60e ( aka electronically controlled 700r4) then it does not have a TV cable. Now if someone swapped in a t-350 ( 3 speed/ no OD) then it could have a kickdown. Have you followed the cable in question down to the transmission? It sounds to me like it's cruise control ( which would feel like it didn't have any tension on it).

badzracing
01-21-2009, 07:52 PM
the silver colored tranny is a 700r4...notice the big looped cable ( that is the TV cable)

the black one is a 4l60e...notice no provision for the cable ....

There is no doubt in my mind that it needs to be rebuilt. Even if it the problem originated with a bad solenoid, driving it even a little bit with the wrong pressure will fry the clutch packs. Replacing a solenoid may work for a little while, but it won't be the end of your problem/s.

So what are you planning on doing when Aamco calls you back to tell you the trans is wasted? They told you what you wanted to hear just to get the car in the door knowing damn well that there is a 99% chance the trans needs to come out.. We were just trying to tell you what your problem is based on our experience, I am sorry if we did not give you false hope by saying things like "just change the fluid and see what happens" or "maybe its just a $25 solenoid".. We very careful when dealing with big franchise and chains, they are there to make money, not to build quality transmissions.

It needs to be rebuilt. Aamco knows this. They are very good at doing what they have to to get your car in their shop. Free towing and diagnostics means they already have your vehicle and chances are you'll just leave it there to be fixed. You will pay way to much for an inferior transmission. You'd be much better off financially, letting one of us rebuild it for you. It will be done right the first time and have much better parts put into it.

im not trying to say that everyone here wont do a good job. but im not sure what to do now because i just got done paying for college and all my books and just bought a pointless starter for $120 and now im screwed with money because i cant afford to get it rebuilt.now i have to pay for my phone bill and insurance is due today and i have no job . what a sob story lmao. but not ssure what to do right now with my car.

IMO, I wouldn't let AAMCO touch it unless they offer to tow it back to your house after they tell you that you need the trans rebuilt and you tell them you can't pay for it....

I know all about money being tight. Your best bet is to save some cash until you can have it rebuilt. That will ultimately save you money in the long run.
