could be a fee things, possible something as simple as a servo or something more involved, burn clutch bands etc. To me the torque covertor wouldn't be the problem from what you're discribing since it shifts fine 1-2.
What condition is the trans in? miles, last serviced. Hows the flid level, and the condition of the fluid? Should be pink/purple and not smell burnt.

Sounds like the 3rd band is going...
Check the fluid... color, smell, level...

Theres no band for 3rd. The band is only for 2nd and 4th. Its sounds like your 3/4 clutches are shot. A bad converter clutch wont make the car rev like its in neutral. Its common for the 4L60e to burn up the 3/4 clutch pack. Sounds like its time for a rebuild.

The symptom you are describing is typical of the 3/4 clutches failing. This is very common in 700/4l60e transmissions. Time for a rebuild..

It's internal, one way or another you will have to pull it apart to find out what is wrong.

the tv cable is in the passenger side of the tranny roughly in the middle. There is a plastic tube with a 10mm bolt in it. The cable has a round piece with a "hook eye" and the shaft in the tranny is shaped like a question mark. However, TV cables rarely come loose in the transmission. It's more than likely broken. In any case, if you've been driving it like that for a while, your 3/4 packs ( as well as 1st and 2nd) are probably shot anyway. TV cables control line pressure in relation to throttle position. If you were driving it spiritedly with a broken cable, the transmission wouldn't have had nearly enough pressure and you probably noticed "shorter" shifts. You could try replacing the tv cable if it is indeed broken and see if it makes a difference, but my guess is it needs rebuilding.

For a GOOD trans from a known 4l60E builder, about $1500+ to your door. Then install yourself, or will need to take to a shop.

Not really, look at it as an opportunity to have the trans done the way you want.. Quicker, firmer shifts, stronger internals, a nice new converter with higher stall and better efficency. It will feel like a whole new car!
We can do the job here for you if you like. Just give me a call and we will set something up..
Thanks
Josh

I understand.. Just beware of quick fixes, they usually lead to a larger bill than if you just bit the bullet and did it right the first time..

This is in your 95 or your 1990?......I'm only asking because the '95 shouldn't have a tv cable...if it's the 1990, then disregard.

a quick fix only leads to more and more patch and go! in the long run your gonna end up spending the $ to get it fix the right way anyhow. i agree with js completely, re-build it and get yourself a good converter.

Unless someone installed an earlier transmission for some reason, you don't.
