exhaust?

I've noticed that the exaust pipe on my '93 Z28 rusted through. I need a new exhaust. I wonder, what experience do people have with different brands? It's an autocross car, so my priorities would be:

1. Power, lightness and low price
2. Quiet

So far the posibilities seem to be:

Flowmaster, cheapest at ~$300, not stainless but it's probably OK.
Magnaflow ~$400, stainless.
Borls ~$800, stainless

Could not find the weights for them. GRM did a comparison for BMW 335, and Borla was the lightest by a wide margin, decent power (though nowhere like the claimed 7-10% improvement, more like 5HP out of 300) and not the most loud but louder than stock. Do I understand right that I can just block off the right side on Borla and not install the right-side tips at all? Would it affect the power?

I sthere any power and weight difference between the single-sided and dual-sided Flowmaster?

Do I get it right that 3" is the stock size of the catalyst flange?

Flowmaster mufflers have terrible flow rates and are loud.

If you want quiet go with a Magnawflow.
if you want a good price on a catback PM me. I carry just about all the cat back brands.

hmmm, i might consider a custom bent system with single entry and single exit muffler. find a smaller muffler to cut down on weight. off the stock location, the cat has an s-pipe mounted to it. it bends the exhaust to the trans tunnel. you would probably just mate to that unless its rusted out too.

Ill post pics of my system. I just had it exit before th rear wheel on the right hand side of my car. less weight, balanced a little better, and sounds great. I have a magnaflow cat, glasspack muffler, out 90* before the rear wheel. mines a V6, and it really cuts down on the raspiness because the length was shortened.

Glasspack is I think what I have now (stock-located, dual-pipe). Got it on the car from the previous owner, he mentioned Vortec or some such. It has been loud to start with, and with race usage the glass has burned out pretty qick in a year or so. So now it's quite loud and booming (though passed the NJ inspectin fine last time).

Yea dynomax supposedly flows good. Though I swapped out my 01 ws6 catback w/ a dynomax superturbo muffler w/ a LM1 and saw a nice sotp gain...

Dynomax Ultraflow would be my option...fairly loud when you are romping on it, but pretty much any aftermarket exhaust for a performance car is going to be.

which is what shops are for. We already had discussions on here about going to a staty place, with mixed results. Id rather spend the 50 bucks and enjoy two years, then hold my car back from fun.

Not going for sound tone or volume. Borla is way too expensive for what the OP needs.

I'd say dynomax like above or hooker aerochamber. I've run the hooker for years with my LT1 and its reasonable priced i think.

had a borla on my LT1 and loved it. sounded great, but i never would have payed $800 for it. have a magnaflow on my car now, and like that also. i like the sound of magnaflow on lt1's even though it's a little mild for my taste.

I will also chime in my vote for the Hooker. It carries a nice smooth characteristic tone, looks good, and fitment was very nice. Been using mine for 5 years now. I'd definitely buy one again if I had to.

Well, I've got Magnaflow (thanks to the Whiplash Performace guys for a good deal). So far I've weighed it, shows about 41-41.5 lbs.Internally the muffler looks like one pipe splitting into two, with many holes drilled in them, opening into the muffler case. I figure, a straight pipe just can't be too restrictive :-)

I've got Magnaflow installed. It's definitely not quiet. I'd say, about as loud as the muffler I've had before, only the sound is different. There is less of bass rumble and more of the crisp farting sounds. At some RPM and throttle positions the whole car resonates with them. If Borla is even more loud, that's got to be real loud!

Glad to see you got it installed. My Magnaflow on my goat is really quiet, but yet Chris's Camaro is about 10 times as loud as mine at idle.

Looks like I've found an installation problem. It rubs on the cross-brace. I'm sure that's what makes the occasional bangs, and probably adds to the noise in general. I guess things should get better after fixing that.

An update: it clears the cross-brace fine, it's the clamp on the muffler that got loose. So the muffler and the rear pipes were moving around. After tightening that clamp things seem better.
