Long story short, comcast is the suxor lately. I rarely have connection for more than 10 minutes and my tv images are all sorts of messed up.

So, finally downloaded the tether app for my droid. So much win. 8-)

Yea, but it finally just stopped working this morning and since my parents are home, they got pissed and called comcast. They apparently have more weight at comcast.

Much better than no internet. And in all honesty, it was pretty quick.

do you pay to use the droid as a tether or is there an app that lets you get around that?

LTb1ow
02-21-2011, 03:36 PM
I use a free app,f paying for something I already pay for

It will depend on which data plan you've got.

I am fairly certain you can do it if you are within your data plan's parameters of usage. It acts like an air card when you tether it.

But I know if you use the verizon tether app, you pay for it. So IDK.

Awesome! Which app did you download?

LTb1ow
02-22-2011, 11:49 AM
Easy tether, pretty straightforward, and its easy to switch between using the verizon or comcast connection.

BigAls87Z28
02-22-2011, 11:50 AM
do you have to download anything on your laptop?

LTb1ow
02-22-2011, 11:52 AM
Ya, you download the app, then connect via USB, install program and voila.

Even then, if you have the unlimited data plan I don't think they can say ****. At work we have a bunch of air cards issued out there (each has an issued phone # and they are treated like a phone) and some people used them as their normal internet connection every day for months. Performance is meh but it works. I've done way more than 5Gb a month on my MiFi and Verizon didn't say anything either.

Def give it a shot, the only thing it has given me an issue with is getting to my school google email account... which doesn't make sense being as I can do it on the browser on the phone..

But, its def faster than dial up yo! 8-)

If you have a GSM phone like T mobile you can root it and controll pretty much everything it does. And they will never know you are tethering it, other than a somewhat high data usage. Verizon can keep track of it

I looked up easytether last night after this thread and the problem with the google account is that it tries to connect through https which isn't supported in the free version of easytether but if you buy it for $9.99 it is. I'm gonna give it a try one of these days. Gonna be pretty sweet to have internet while your at say Atco:nod:

service was always spotty for me, but I haven't been there in almost a year so it could have gotten better, and I have a better phone now

AFAIK, Verizon will only flip and make you pay if they find that you are using the phone as a mobile hotspot (rooted) without paying them for it. The single USB-tethering doesn't seem to ruffle their feathers.

I was gonna do the USB tether on my X, but every app that I have looked at seems to have either no support, or very sketchy support for PowerPC Macs, and my laptop is a G4 powerbook, so it's not much use to me.

Easytether looks like it had a recent update for Macs.

Tethering via USB is fine and you won't get charged as long as you have a good data plan. If you tether from the droid wirelessly (hot spot), this is when they will charge you. Rooted Droid here with a nice wireless tether app....no charges on my bill outside of my normal plan.

pwnd by the Comcast sub-contractor.

What did he say after he made the problem worse?

LTb1ow
02-23-2011, 09:33 AM
The lack of internet is being caused by an issue at the pole, so it was out of his control. However, my upstairs cable apparently was creating a large amount of noise and to prevent it from spreading they. Installed a pad to keep it contained. So,gotta go find that and remove it.

What company is the Meh performance? Verizon? If so, as I have said all along, VZ FTL. I have T-mobile and I tether mine to the tune of up 40 GB a month and I have no performance issues. A lot of the time it is better than the dedicated 100MB internet connection we have at work. We also use the air cards through Sprint (I think) and they have performance issues with them on the computers out in the field

I can vouch for VZ and AT&T being meh. Granted I throw a ton of data around but it's still mediocre even if I'm not.

Verizon prides itself on reliability, not overall speed.

It's very unlikely to happen unless you start transferring large amounts of data monthly across that wireless tether, but if VZW catches you doing that, you are gonna pay. They gonna be mad at you.....
