Haha nice. I never really played quake though. My computer was never powerful enough, when it was there was a newer and better quake. I was doom and duke nukem 3d. Online multplayer with a 56k.
Ahh, those were the days...

I will say Quake/Quake 2 was a HUGE step in first person shooters. The online and game physics lacked hard core but the engine was very advanced for the time. The game went open source in the 90's (meaning the source code went public for others to modify the game).
The guys who made Counter-Strike used the source code to make the first version of Counter-Strike. It was the first sign of what today's first person shooters are; it had a good physics engine and the guns had ammunition/reloading/etc... minus all the Hints and "helpful tips".

IMO the original Half-Life was a massive step forward. Valve does/did an incredible job with it.

I gotta say the original DOOM for the PC was a game that I played 6-7 hours at night. Those were the days when every advancement was jaw dropping and games like Wolfstein 3D were doing things that we never dreamed of.
Now the games are so realistic and advanced that we just expect them to come with something better and not be really floored when some new feature is now added. Example is John Madden NFL. When the series first came out, it was like look at the snow, see how realistic the players look. Now you have shadows and 20 different hair styles, you see their breath on a cold field and so forth. There is not a whole lot let for the game design people to come up with because I think they have covered most of the bases and it's hard to get excited when ALL the good games look like your watching them live anyway.

Dare I say most of that stuff is just roster updates now.

Half life was based off counter strike but counter strike was first... and the physics engine was taken from counter strike. Yes, half life was a big step but it's mainly because of counter strike.

I remember playing Rise of the Triad and Wolfenstein in middle school. I had to turn off the monitor if my parents walked into the room... haha
Madden hasn't changed all too much lately. Mostly just the controls in the past 5 years, but Madden 2005/2006 (last PS2 era) was the best.

What? Where did you hear that? Counterstrike was a mod to the original Half-Life...

Incorrect partially. Counter Strike was indeed around before Half Life. All original 1.0-1.5 & Condition Zero/Half Life 1 & 2 are based off the Quake gaming engines Id tech and id tech 2. The founders of Counter Strike had made it under a different name called Action Quake 1/2 and SEALs. Valve bought the game rights in the late 90's and hired the programmers of the game. They spent time redesigning the id tech & id tech 2 engine that they had been using for Action Quake. At this point Valve's focused turned to a new game called Half-Life. From their Action Quake/SEALs was re-released using the even more up to date engine under the name Counter-Strike.
If you really want to get technical, a large percent of the code used in the Action Quake (modified id tech 1/2) engines was used in Half Life... which would make Half Life a mod to Action Quake.
Needless to say the first real jump in first person shooters was made with SEALs/Action Quake 1/2 in the mid 90's. The reason it is not a well known game is they couldn't sell the game because it was using an un-licensed version of ID Tech Engine (the core of the gameplay behind Quake) with a large amount of ID Tech 2 Engine code (the core behind Quake 2 gameplay). They would have had to pay something like $50,000 to license the game with ID Software and two college students can't afford such a thing. Valve bought the rights to the game for something like $10,000, hired the two kids and then bought a copy of the license from ID Software.
Even the Source engine that valve/steam claims is all mighty original and impressive still shows references to ID Tech 1 & 2.
Hell, I believe the original Call of Duty was based off ID Software's ID Tech 3 (Quake 3). ID Software pretty much did everything for the gaming world. You would be hard pressed to find a game from pre-2005 that wasn't derived from one of the ID Tech engines.
