A few more updates with a general game plan.

Trans removal:
- Plan is to remove the trans/bell/clutch from the car this Saturday at the house.

- If nothing else looks screwed up that will cost me an additional arm/leg, then all aboard the wallet destroying train next week when I order all the things.

Part Selection:
- The T56 big boy will be the trans of choice with the stronger 9310 gear set. I plan on going with a slightly shorter 5th gear so if I ever decide to do another 1/4+ event, I will actually be able to see reasonable RPM/power in 5th. 6th will remain the same to maintain a nice highway cruising RPM. I'm told this trans will hold 1,200hp. I may splurge a bit and have them powdercoat the case. The current fluid pump system will be maintained.

- I spoke to a few clutch companies and I'm pretty set on a Monster LT1-S triple organic disc setup. The cost will be comparable to most any other reputable clutch plus they have done a few unicorn high powered LTx cars. The clutch should hold 1,000hp and drive similar to stock. One added benefit is they can make the slave hydraulic line length to my needs. The alternative would be replacing the master to slave line with a new one from Tick since the LS version is longer. The fitting style will still need to be converted though but this will be much less a PITA vs replacement of the line...much cheaper too.

- The driveshaft will likely need to be shortened and I will need a new yoke for the trans output. My current trans used a 30 spline output, this one will be a 31. A billet piece will get the nod.

- Next is a new bellhousing from QuickTime to convert the LS style trans to my archaic engine.

So that's the current plan. Since no core is needed for the trans, I'm told it would be about 2-3 weeks to build. I asked if I could visit the shop and see that process in action but I'm not sure if schedules will align.

Lastly, what does someone upgrade while their car isn't really driveable? The head unit of course! I swapped out the rock solid Alpine unit I had in and tossed in a Pioneer 4100NEX. This came from my wife's sold Lexus so rather than get low balled on it during resale, I got this into the firebird for less than $30 in parts. I reused the Axxess steering wheel control box which gave me some heartache. Turned out the wiring connector for it had the wire pinned in the wrong slot. Repinned and viola, all worked perfectly. It's strange but I'd say the sound is well improved as well. This head unit does Android Auto and a few other tricks. The look is much cleaner as well. Dare I say there was a bit of weight savings too!

The only time I will want to see this trans is when it's flashing it's belly at Racewars.

whew, that sounds like a good (but expensive) trans setup. hopefully there isnt too much internal damage. a shortened 5th gear sounds like a good plan. keep us updated!

Yes my wallet will be lit on fire come Tuesday but I seem to have to pay a lot to play.

I don't think the current trans is hurt that bad. I expect maybe a shift fork and some synchro replacement will be the main items. I doubt the major hard parts are damaged but we will see once I dissect it.

I love the parts list as well.

So wait monster makes a clutch for our cars? That's nice to know.

Cheaper to just get a new driveshaft or it's reasonable to change it up like that?

Monster doesn't make a clutch for our cars. I'm converting to essentially a LS style drivetrain from the bell to the trans. The clutch fork will be gone and replaced with the internal slave. The only change to the clutch will be the flywheel.

As for driveshaft, once we measure it all and see if a change is needed, I will see what a new one costs vs shortening the one I have. Most folks who have a S60 already have a new shaft since they need it so I'm not sure how well it would resell.

So this weekend was generally productive. On Saturday. the car was put in the air to fix the bent drivers side LCA relocation bracket, realign the rear and remove the trans. Maybe the clutch and bellhousing depending on time.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/The%20Bird/IMG_20180526_104220_829_zpsxh92djnw.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/The%20Bird/IMG_20180526_104220_829_zpsxh92djnw.jpg.html)

Rear LCA relocation bracket out. I'd say that was a bit bent. I replaced both sides just to make sure everything was in good order. Measured, measured and measured so everything should be nice, straight and centered. Took me what felt like forever but I'm relieved that's all that got wrecked with the suspension. It was also a good reminder to go through a nut/bolt check. I noticed a few attachment points to be not loose but not tight either.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w170/bmdeluca/The%20Bird/IMG_20180526_112201_zpswysrc2gy.jpg (http://s176.photobucket.com/user/bmdeluca/media/The%20Bird/IMG_20180526_112201_zpswysrc2gy.jpg.html)

Next was the trans. No real progress pics here. Just out! Everything went pretty smoothly, almost as if it's been done before.... I'm happy with myself for not laying down a thick bead of RTV for the shifter base plate. It popped off pretty nicely. I used an assortment of lengthy extensions to grab the top bolts on the trans. Overall, time consuming but not horrendous. I had it out in about 2.5-3hrs. Again, really pleased I went with quick disconnects for the trans fluid lines. I think maybe a couple drops trickled out on the initial yank but that was it. I was pretty surprised to notice the Y-pipe I painted with high temp black paint a couple seasons ago has returned to it's natural color. Everything was cleaned and prepped so am I to assume heat burned it off? I may wrap the pope later on. As for the trans, there is not much to look at but the input shaft tip looked perfect but lateral slop in the input felt def "out of spec".

Pictured below - That could be trans fluid or blood.... My hands must be baby soft as I managed to remove quick a bit of skin even with gloves on.

The last schlepping of the trans off the trans jack to the dolly properly tired me out so I was done for the day. I honestly couldn't believe how filthy. I threw out my shirt and took a very long shower.

Sunday arrived and it was time to get the bell and clutch out. Everything was going well until I hit the two upper bolts on both sides of the tunnel. I recall the install happening with the engine in the car but I'm not quite sure how we did it. No tool I had would get to the allen head bolts. Sockets and even an allen wrench were too long. I tried a bit of prying to angle the engine back to get something on but no luck. Ginger anger ensued. Out came the cutoff wheel (thanks Adam) and I shorted both the allen wrench and the socket with the allen. I didn't bother measuring and just hacked away. To my surprise, my modified tools were able to get the job done and out came the bell.

Next came the clutch. Feeling the end of the effort ahead, this thankfully went super smooth. My cordless impact (Thanks again Adam) made quick work of the flywheel bolts and it was done. The clutch looks worse than it really is. The metal surfaces can be cleaned up and the discs show a good amount of material remaining. I showed my Dad and immediately blamed him for the hot spots likely caused during his 1.4x 60' pass :).

I had access to a lift but decided doing it at the house was a better situation for multiple parties. The reinstall will be done on a lift. I'm sure the car will be ready in the hottest of weather but it can't be helped if I want to drive it around before the fall/winter.

Idk how to word it. I want to jack up the car and put weight back on the wheels. I see some ramps on Amazon but they have bad reviews. I figured I can just jack up each corner then rest the wheels on something. Do I just get some wood and place it under the wheels?

What do you guys do?

I did enjoy an extension taking a good shot at my head but you brave taking an impact to super long extensions for bell to trans bolts. The work isn't hard but don't read that as I think I'm any good at this. If I worked on cars for a living, I'd lose my a$$ on every job.

I got in touch with Larry at 2nd Gen Engineering and was able to coordinate time to meet up with him on Saturday to drop off some parts. The trans case is still at powdercoat but hopefully will get done shortly so it can get off to the builder for his work.

Prospectively the car will hopefully be back on the road mid-late July. It looks like I will miss the annual TA run in NJ again but that's nothing new. I seem to miss it every year due to my schedule getting in the way or the car decides to not be ready.

Figure I'd toss up a quick update.

Everything was full steam ahead for the install until it was realized that the flywheel was considerably larger (Diameter) than would fit on the car. It would essentially slam into the starter and didn't have any chance of bolting up. After discussions with Monster, it was clear they sent a LS flywheel (with a LTx bolt pattern) and not the LTjuan that was needed. As folks know me, I'm pretty particular when I order oddball parts to confirm everything will be correct. They were good about the situation and provided an overnight shipping to get the clutch back to them.

Unfortunately this is where things slowed down a bit. The intent was this to be corrected quickly but it took longer than initially described. In any event, the clutch finally shipped last Thursday but via regular fedex ground so tracking says it will arrive today.

In the interim, Larry (TaKid455) has been getting everything else ready for the final install. He addressed a concern with the clutch slave and decided to hardline one of the lines to avoid a sideloading issue down the road. He had to modify the tunnel to account for the shifter now being pushed rearward by about 1.5". The trans crossmember also needed to be modified as well. He even had the foresight that if this car does go LS in the future, this crossmember can be reused. The driveshaft also needed to be shortened as well. I decided to replace the yolk and slip joint while I was there so the drivetrain sans the rear are all fresh. He has been great with communication, patience and sending me images of all the work. Hopefully the rest of the install goes smoothly and the bird will be back on the road shortly.

The Bird is all buttoned up and I got her home yesterday.

For those that aren't aware, I had Larry at 2nd Gen Engineering in Hackettstown handle the install. Larry was meticulous with his work while providing great communication along the way. The communication goes a long was as I'm all about knowing what's going on, when it will happen and setting of expectations. Unlike other shop experiences, I honestly didn't sit and wonder, "Hey, what's going on with my car???". I knew Larry was plugging away and coddled me with texts/emails with images while letting me know what was worked on and the next hurdle. Simply put, if you need fbody work done give him a call.

Like most things aftermarket, the time it takes to install is never quite as planned unless it's been done before. I'm likely one of only a few idiots spending the money and opting to use a LS-style T56 with an old LTx engine combo. But aren't all T56's pretty similar? Sure but with this combo, the trans essentially ends up being about 1.5" longer.

This required all the following modifications:

- Shorten driveshaft
- Modifications to trans tunnel opening (trimming rear section and adding metal up front)
- Cross member modification/fabrication since holes wouldn't line up with under-body threads
- Revised trans pump fitting setup to fit within the tunnel
- New hard-line for clutch slave with quick disconnect
- Clearance Quicktime bellhousing a little to clear starter housing
- Modify motor plate to clear starter housing and oil pan flange
- Run new slave bleed line
- New driveshaft slip yoke - Also bought new 1350 joints as well

Larry indicated nothing was particularly hard but it's all the little details that will make it work properly.

The only real issue was receiving the wrong clutch from Monster. Despite all attempts to make certain the clutch was ordered properly, the clutch arrived with a flywheel meant for a LS but with a LTx bolt pattern..... I didn't bother checking although it crossed my mind to do so but it happens. Monster handled the situation and sent Larry a FedEx overnight label to get it back to them. Unfortunately the new clutch took longer to receive than expected but Larry used the wait time to work on the other items needed to get everything ready for the final install. I'm sure I tied up his lift for a few days more than it should but again, Larry was accommodating.

On to some pics.

Well crap....

Dat hardline - Larry did this as he wasn't liking how the soft line was getting a bit sideloaded. The remote bleeder was run nicely and "snaps" into the plastic slave reservoir. Almost like it belongs there.

That's better - Larry was also kind enough to plan for the future if I decide to embrace the LSx life. There are bolt holes in the crossmember so if things move forward, it will still work. The metal plate added to the shifter area uses the original bolt holes so again, if things change and move forward down the road, I'm halfway there...

I took the car for a ride with Larry before taking delivery and everything drove nicely. The clutch pedal is actually a little lighter than my old McLeod Street Twin which was already pretty good for its power handling capabilities. The clutch engagement is a bit lower but very progressive. It will take a little getting used to as I've been driving high engagement clutches most of my life. The trans shifted very smoothly and it definitely likes RPM. My old trans was typically notchy but I learned to think that was kind of normal after a while. It was oddly refreshing to have a trans that would just act "normal". It was exciting but uneventful if that makes any sense. The shorter 5th gear ratio was also nice to keep some rpm at non-highway speed but not feeling like you are lugging anything.

I couldn't give Larry a proper ride as any WOT boost would light up the all season 275 tires. The CCWs with the R888s will go back on so she can hook up better on the street.

So that ends this chapter, hopefully for a long time as my wallet is having a funeral service this weekend. It will be a closed casket affair. I'm going to get her cleaned up, toss on the pretty wheels and after everything is confirmed to still cooperate after some miles, she will get her ass kicked at the track rental in the fall. I'm guessing I'm running out of excuses for this car not running a number eh??

It was a pleasure working with Brian and his TA. Since he is no stranger to things not going as planned, it makes communication easier when something arises. Don't think there was anything about this install that wasn't modified to some degree. Overall install really wasn't bad, just a lot of littles that needed attention before one could continue. The flywheel issue (purely Monster's fault) set the tone for the rest of the project. That was really unexpected but we worked around it. Just made me check things in greater detail throughout install.

Regarding the hardline mounting mentioned above, there is a secured mount just out of pictured frame. Debated on a few options and choose that one that secured the line yet allowed a small amount of float as we didn't want the floating TOB/ slave to be fixed by the line mount. Either option had ups and downsides and the flex line option sideloaded the slave fitting.

The end product is a success. With some cars I get, I don't know what to expect regarding street manners. Brian's car is not hard to drive all things considering. It drives like most hot steer cars...until the boooost builds. Then it shows its true colors yet still well mannered. I let Brian give me a ride to demonstrate that being my test drives focused on evaluating the trans and its behavior and not the point in which the rear end kicks out sideways. The trans feel like any triple carbon syncro trans and the clutch is rather normal. While heavier than stock, most would never know its a triple disc or that the trans is built to what it is. To me, that is a win.

Note: The owner of Monster did inform me during our conversation that due to the flywheel issue, they made a batch of them. SO if anyone wants to to a triple disc clutched LT engine to LS trans swap, they have the parts in stock ready to go.

The saga continues and it's an end to an era.

The "winter" projects original intent was to address some of the excess heat under the hood and get some weight off the nose. Those upgrades have snowballed...like all things do for me. My 5 pt belts also needed a recert too.

I originally wanted to just wrap the headers and y-pipe but after some deliberation, it wasn't an ideal solution for a couple reasons. 1) I was told if any oil gets on the wrap, it will stink forever. 2) Clearance around the headers is tight and so is access to the bolts to tighten everything down. Getting these to go into the car would likely have resulted in ripped wrap.

I recall hearing about Swaintech ceramic coating and folks who have used it, seem to rave about it touting its thermal insulation abilities and durable finish. The Swaintech owner was quick to let me know that it only comes in white and is a functional coating, not a pretty one. With some help from Pals as usual, Matt ripped out the headers in short order and Beggs helped get these shipped safely. They spent about 3-4 weeks at Swaintech before they made their way back to me.

http://i.imgur.com/LNLYQnKh.jpg (https://imgur.com/LNLYQnK)

Obviously the white and soon to be smugged look isn't going to work so I tried to brush them with POR15 Black Velvet. The brushing did OK but it wasn't even enough and looked liked it was a shade tree job. Not wanting to paint in the garage, I was able to use a professional spray booth to spray these properly. I headed down to All Time Auto Body and my dad knocked out the header and Y-pipe coating which came out great.

http://i.imgur.com/pWit8h0h.jpg (https://imgur.com/pWit8h0)

Now with that done, the headers can go back in. Before we get there, I will mention Adam had come by weeks prior and ran the new power cables for the battery relocation. The seats came out as well as the belts so they could get off to Stroud for recert. The FP hot wire kit was also ran to the rear and man, did this really start clearing space in the engine bay!

I wanted to get the headers back in as Taylor would be coming by this weekend to finalize the battery relocation. I wanted everything in place so we knew where to terminate wires and get the routing correct. What I thought would be a long but not bad day turned in a mess. I started with the passenger side as this seemed to be the most challenging coming out. I was able to get her in without too much trouble taking my time. New plugs went in as well. Now on to the drivers side.....and holy hell. Simply put, it just didn't fit and I have no idea how it came out easier than the other side. In my haste and ginger rage, I somehow got it wedged between the k, oil pan and block. I really though this thing would need to be cut out and contemplated burning the car down at this point. After a lot of wrestling around and loudly proclaimed expletives.....it went in. I got a few bolts in and need to do a few more plus the plugs but I was toast.

During the rage moments (plural), I bashed in the corner of my oil filter a little bit. Not wanting to run it damaged, I guess it was time I changed the oil. I swore to never use a K&N filter again but lied to myself as I stared at it hoping the 1" nut on the bottom would do its job. Sure enough, the nut stripped.....MUTHAF******. I could only laugh and maybe cry a bit. With the header in, room to work is slim so out came the oil filter wrenches. Two of them were useless and wouldn't tighten up before I ran out of room. I was forced to use a stubby ratchet and SOMEHOW freed the filter after a few attempts. My left arm and hand could be characterized as Thanos' after he used the infinity gauntlet.

So.....before the header debacle, I did do a few other things. I removed and wrapped the procharger elbow in gold foil. Yea I did a crappy job but it will work.

The procharger oil was drained and man does that stink. If you think rear diff fluid smells, have a whiff of used procharger oil. Holy hell.

Oh and last but not least, I yanked the A/C.....I got a shiny block off plate too.

So she is still a mess and will surely need some cherry after all of this but the extra room is so far feeling fresh. The condenser didn't want to slide out nicely so I am waiting for a day where my patience (or a helpful Pal) are available.

I have a new fancy Speed Inc accessory relocation setup in hand which I'm sure won't fit or line up just like most aftermarket parts. Stay tuned boys and girls.

I was in rare form. Good no one was around.

Just curious, why don't you like K&N oil filters?

The damn nut strips out too easily. Where my oil filter sits relative to header and oil pan kick out, getting anything in there is a total PITA let alone getting leverage to do what needed to be done. The first time it happened I was using a 12 pt socket when I should have just found a 5 pt. This time around, it just didn't want to come off. I am always careful to not go ham on tightening these for that exact issue. I had a Wix in stock so that went in.

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if there was a performance issue with the filter itself. I've had the same issue with them- the nut itself seems shallow and pre-rounded.

It wouldn't have been a big deal aside from the lack of access. I like the larger size of the filter but done with the stupid nut design.

We will see how it lasts and for the cost....it better. The coating sure is tough. I beat the crap out of the driver side header and the coating somehow held up. Let's see how it does after some LTx nuclear level heat.

Soooo it's been a while and a good bit has been happening behind the scenes for those not following on IG/FB. Normally I'm better about taking pics and posting progress but it just didn't happen well this time. For those that care and like a story, here is the run through of where we are today.

Last you saw, the AC was removed and like most of you that know me, I couldn't just go for the cheap $30 A/C delete pulley nor the "backyard fab" accessory bracket for that slick low mount style. No I had to go for the pricey pulley set machined from billet to serve my needs and lighten my wallet.

https://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server2400/yiwxi/products/2562/images/27683/IMG_6493__83740.1486498747.1280.1280.jpg?c=2

I didn't like how the power steering pump pulley looked so this little gem got the nod as well.

https://cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server2400/yiwxi/products/5979/images/16973/IMG_1745_1280x853__67312.1427209341.1280.1280.jpg? c=2

I then ventured off into buying a bunch of heavy welding wire cable, crimping/cutting tools, eyelets, etc to finalize the connections throughout the car. As you may recall, Adam was kind enough to help run the main wires through the interior and Kirk swung up for half an evening to get the relocated battery box in it's final resting place along with the cutoff switch. Adam's idea of trying to mount the switch so that the rod would go through the trunk key lock panned out very well so that's what we did. Kirk machined the rod to the appropriate length so that all came out great.

Since all the big decisions were made, most of the rest of the work was up to me due to schedule conflicts and other more important life events.

Exhaust:
When Smash was here, the headers came out fairly easy on the drivers side but the passenger side was a bitch. I decided since I was doing this solo, I would start on the hard side so as not to end up tired and frustrated when I needed my sanity and energy the most. Well that didn't go as planned. The passenger side went in fairly well but the drivers side was a fight. I can't remember a time I was more angry and frustrated. During my attempt to install it, I managed to wedge it into a position that I swore would require something to be cut. After calming myself down more times than I care to mention, I somehow got it free and didn't destroy the coating in the process. I managed to get the header in with some painters tape and persuasion however the oil filter took a good hit and needed to be replaced.

Sweaty and very tired, I look up at the oil filter and have no idea why I'm seeing a K&N unit with the stupid nut at the bottom. I swore off of these after my last issue with the dumb nut but I guess the inner cheap in me made me use one I probably had in stock. I took my time and was careful but sure enough, the nut stripped so I was in for another fight. That battle ended the same evening but in the end, I was pretty shocked I got these things done.

Next came the y-pipe which was thankfully straightforward in getting some fresh gaskets and RTV high temp on the tail end.

Battery/Wiring:

As mentioned, Kirk helped get the position of everything finalized which was a huge help. He installed the power/ground jump leads on the bottom of the car so should I have an issue with the battery, I can get the vehicle power/started or just get the damn trunk open. Remember this is a vert and I'm a husky gentleman so slipping through the area into the trunk with cables won't be fun or possible.

Next you will see where the cutoff switch was mounted under the trunk lid release.

Next we have the almost finished product. I removed the CD changer and rescued the mix CD's I had in there for future.

https://i.imgur.com/cS82giLm.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/HWAOMIIm.jpg

Now I know what you may say....but Brian, where did your subs go. Don't worry, I will be finding a way to get at least one sub back in the trunk. I am likely just going to cut the box and recarpet it so it fits between the battery and other side of the trunk well.

Finished switch rod
https://i.imgur.com/oNDMKEym.jpg

For now, I'm keeping it in and can easily unscrew it when not at the racetrack. I want to get something nice to plug the hole when not in use.

Adam came up and helped finalize some of the wire connections up front since I was generally gun shy about making the final cuts. He did a great job replacing the power block with a new one hidden in the fender well. I didn't get a pic of it before installing the fender line and for that I'm sorry.

We were hopefully of getting a first re-start on this day but as I was tightening the nut for the starter power post, I heard a couple small cracks. I didn't realize what it was until things got very loose.

https://i.imgur.com/hesK8kwm.jpg

I debated ordering a new starter or replacing just the solenoid. A new one was only a little over $100 so I figured why not. The new Amazon Delco professional unit arrived and was nearly outside the box. They decided to ship it in the OE box which wasn't fit for transport. While it looked generally OK, I wasn't happy. A couple phone calls later and I got a refund plus they didn't want it back....OK sure!

Since my OG starter worked fine minus the new window, Smash said why not swap the solenoid. A few stubborn bolts later on the new unit and some grinding for access and I had it off. The starter was now in and secured but required a bit too many spacers for my liking due to the new big cables.

https://i.imgur.com/ErpEQ4Lm.jpg

I connected new grounds in the front of the car and utilized existing holes in the block and the sway bar mounts that no longer had any use. For the rear, holes were drilled in the framerail but later they received welded studs for a nice secure connection.

Accessory Bracket:
No instructions were included so I was looking at a bag of various hardware, different length bolts, washers, etc. This was definitely one of those install it and redo things as you go situation. Eventually everything found there home and I really love the look and access provided. A friend on Facebook with the same setup provide a ton of helpful pics which were invaluable to shortening the install process.

Everything looked pretty well lined up but that wasn't the case. The crank pulley sits just a bit out from everything (always has) so when Adam came up, he helped me add spacers to the bracket. Now all is well.

There are many other things I will include in another post, include a weird starting issue, but its Friday and Miller time.

Here are some pics to take you into the weekend.

2. our cars are complete opposites. you figure what parts you want and get everything together on your own, then the pals help with the install. While i have a team of pal advisors on what to do, but am left to do all the install my self.

1. Sent you a link via text.

2. I still consult and you don't end up with a built LTx without having a few screws loose. I don't hide the fact that I need help with things but I do so for a few reasons. 1) I may know generally what to do when it comes to "car things" however my execution is hindered when working on the Bird. I overthink it all and don't/can't commit. I seem to do much better working on literally anything else. 2) I enjoy time with Pals and sometimes working on something is the excuse. You don't really know my father but it's a DeLuca tradition to "do things" while hanging out. There is very minimal chill with us unfortunately. 3) Physically I need to watch that I don't end up hunched over in a wheel chair drifting into an opioid induced coma.

3. You're making some big changes while I'm just optimizing what I have. I think this will come down to whether your car survives the changes and future abuse.

TL;DR - Long term voltage issue with high RPM, alternator being spun too high, replaced alternator with proper pulley, life is good.

Long read:

Quick update. I've noticed a battery voltage issue even before the relocation of the battery where with RPM, I would see volts gradually drop during a pull. It never seemed to cause an issue with how the car ran but always bugged me. I was thinking it could have been poor belt alignment causing belt slip (always been off a rib on the balancer). I've lived with it for years since the blower first went on the car. The belt never chucked itself and it all worked so life went on.

Since I have this new bracket, now was the time to get the alignment right. Even with the alignment where it needs to be, volts still dropped during a pull which was enough to trigger the check gauges light on the dash.

After doing a bit of reading, it seemed that I may have a couple issues. One being that my alternator may be a bit tired but more prominently, I may be overspinning the alternator causing it to essentially shut down. Doing some quick math and guessing at the pulley size I had on the car, I was likely spinning the alternator to somewhere in the 22k+ range in the upper RPMs. Not good as most only want to spin to 16-18k. Oops.

Assuming the current alternator was trashed, I decided to spend money (Not shocking I know), and grabbed a 200A unit from Powermaster in matte black. I spoke to their tech folks who were very helpful and after doing the math, I needed to grab their 2.5" pulley to keep the idle and upper RPM speed within spec. A few days later, Summit got the package to me and Smash came up to toss it in. I was actually going to tackle this one myself but I decided to slip a disc in my back this prior weekend and while I was doing much better, needed to take it easy.

New alternator went in and guess what, it worked!! Volts were strong at idle and after taking it for a ride yesterday evening, voltage did not drop at all up to near redline. I also was dealing with a fuel pressure drop in the upper RPM range; I assume associated with the reduced voltage from the charging system. That is also cured as well. The fuel system has provided enough fuel but its not a good look to see the pressure dip when you likely need/want it the most.

One less thing....

Well it’s been some time since I last updated this thread so here goes.

As some are aware, my after Racewars situation wasn’t too good. The car literally decided to break itself on the trailer ride home which resulted in me not being able to get the car into any gear. After a lovely 35 pt k-turn, I got it pushed into the garage to be looked at another day. What I thought was a clutch hydraulic issue turned out to be something much more significant.

After much debate, the trans was begrudging pulled to see what the heck happened as the issues all appeared to be related to a trashed pilot bearing. Sure enough…..yep.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50133910993_eeb007c3b7_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2joap6K)Car work (https://flic.kr/p/2joap6K) by Brian DeLuca (https://www.flickr.com/photos/189398536@N04/), on Flickr

But wait, there was more….. as I went to remove the flywheel, I noticed the outside of the flywheel bolts got kissed by the lower clutch disc. Now when this whole setup went together, Monster specifically said to use factory GM flywheel bolts as using anything else (ARP included), will make contact. I noticed a few other questionable concerns with the clutch wear but in the end, Monster made good on the situation and addressed the problem with essentially a new clutch, new bolts (machined) with some changes in the machine work of the flywheel.

Since the trans was out, I figured it would be good to just have that gone through to avoid a situation where it goes back in and needs to come back out should something be wrong. I thought the issue was caught early enough but oh no, that’s not my luck and it turns out a decent amount of components needed to be replaced (input cluster, input shaft, bearings and few other odds/ends). I’m glad I had it gone through but my wallet did not appreciate it. There were ideas as to why the bearing failed which could have just been a bad $25 part or perhaps the bellhousing runout was out of spec. After watching all of the videos on this topic (new to me), the pic below is where things ended up and in short, the bell was without spec and no offset dowels were needed.

This time around, I decided to go with a pilot bushing vs the bearing. If the bushing eventually wears out, it doesn’t (shouldn’t) hurt the trans like the bearing would but I recognize the useful life is shorter. So with that, back goes the clutch and trans. Word to the wise, don’t let three engineers attempt to determine shim spacing for the slave. It was definitely the weekend when this was attempted….

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50134458841_15b4f58e0d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2jodcXp)Car work (https://flic.kr/p/2jodcXp) by Brian DeLuca (https://www.flickr.com/photos/189398536@N04/), on Flickr

Transmission is back in and you’ll notice there is now a temp sensor in the bottom. At some point, I will have the pump kick on with temperature vs RPM so this sensor will come in handy down the road.

Also while the trans/clutch were out, I thought it would be prudent to replace the oil pan gasket as it has been weeping from the rear and while it didn’t leave a drop on the ground, it would make a small mess over time. Prior to the first ride, I did work the clutch and row through the gears while up in the air. All was well so time for a short trip around the block. There is a small loop I take around my area and by the “second lap”, I had the full James Bond smoke screen coming off the back of the car…..great…… I pull in the driveway and leave it running and peak under the car. Sure enough I have oil dripping off of the exhaust.
The next attempt appeared to be a success but I spoke too soon. Everything was looking good on start-up, at temperature, small revs, etc. so time to drive again. I get under and check after a few mile ride and damnit, oil leaking again and while not as bad, it’s way too much (actively just dripping on the ground).

Now a part of me is confident the gasket replacement didn’t go as planned due to the inability to properly prep both sealing surfaces. The pan couldn’t be dropped entirely out of the car with the K member in place, so I think the fiddly install likely was the culprit. So now after 2 failed attempts at a gasket replacement, I decide to solve the problem the only way I know how….spend more money.
I made a call to Stef’s and ordered a new custom oil pan with all the fixings. Some big positives of this pan are a thicker flange for better sealing, larger oil capacity (5.5 to 6.5qts), ability to run my low oil level sensor again, improved oil control and hell, it looks great.
Now to do this install proper, the k-member would need to come down so I grabbed an engine support that sits on the inner fenders. This proved to be a great tool.

So thanks to my great group of friends/family, the old pan came out, new pick-up installed along with the new pan. The engine support worked great and allowed the K-member bolts to be removed and it lowered out of the way enough to sneak out the old pan and install the new. We didn’t need to touch the rest of the suspension. Kirk used a unique approach to cleaning off the RTV off the bottom of the block (fire…..). The new pan went up with some right stuff RTV and torque’d to spec. K-member went up with whatever is the conversion from air to electric impact ugga duggas.

I fired the car up and so far so good….or so I thought. Adam noticed that I had a drip of coolant every 10 seconds or so coming off the head gasket (tab showing in between head/block) along with some oil leaking as well (also from between head/block). Yayyyyy……

I decide to say “screw it” and drive the car but after putting 60+ miles on it over a few days and looking underneath, its just too much leaking. The coolant wasn’t a big deal to be honest but the oil just doesn’t work for me as the car now drips on the floor and the bottom was getting quite saturated. No Bueno. Worth mentioning, the oil leak isn’t showing any significant change in the dip stick level but we know even a little oil will make a mess.

So after a good deal of prep, my friends/family once again continue to appease me and joined for a head gasket replacement “party” yesterday. Thank god I pulled the trigger on the garage AC because it just wouldn’t have gotten done otherwise.

I did my best to get the car reasonably prepped before the tear down. In short order, the intake was off and eventually the head revealing nothing significant. Fun fact is that with the A/C removed, the head with studs was able to be removed in car! The pistons looked good, block surface looked fine, head was OK sans a few valves that got a little hot, bores showed a nice crosshatch, etc. The MLS gasket didn’t show any blow out but that was expected given the modest issue of the leaking. There was never any mixing of fluids either. Some of the studs could have used a little more RTV but that was about it.

Everything received a good cleaning, MLS gasket coated in copper spray and all studs pulled, cleaned and smothered in RTV. The head went back on and studs torque’d in three steps. Unfortunately, just prior to this, one of the stud nuts got misplaced during disassembly which delayed the big show by about 30 mins as we all looked everywhere. Adam eagle eyed the missing nut and off we went.
Next came the intake manifold. My RTV bead on the china walls was going beautifully until someone made a well timed joke. If it leaks, we will know why….

So after all that, it was time to start it up. I fired the car up and it didn’t sound too good (running lean, not happy). Going back a bit, when the valvetrain was removed, I thought we could “cheat” and reinstall the rocker locks in the exact same position without readjusting everything. I had confidence but Smash didn’t. He was right. The other gents had left as it was well into dinner time but Smash was able to stay longer to re-adjust the valvetrain. Valve cover off, I’m rotating the engine under the car and Smash is up top adjusting. Everything is all done and I fire it up…it sounds odd and voltage is low. C’mon!

I take a look at the engine and realize we didn’t connect the main passenger side coil connector. OK let’s try this again. She fires up and there we go! Much much much better. Voltage is up where it should be and it sounds exactly as it should. I let the car get up to temp and it idles for about 5 mins. Temps never went over 185 and AFR was good. I gave it a couple very minor blips of the throttle and again, it sounds great. Smash checks under the car while its running and doesn’t see any leaks so for now, this will do. It was now 830ish so I hastily shoved everything into the corners of the garage so the V could be pulled in.

Job well done by all!!!!

Fingers crossed this is sorted for a while. I’ll likely plan some time to adjust the drivers side rockers as that would be prudent and also address a starter wire arc issue that’s been around since the battery relocation.

Yes it was organized for maybe 30 mins and then there was not a good amount of room to place things out of the way. I'm a bit surprised all that was misplaced was the one head stud nut in the bellhousing.... I also couldn't believe Adam sniped that with a magnet.

The blue stuff is actually plastic wrap used to protect floors. I saw a few shops were using the stuff and after a good deal of homework, I tracked down what it was. The wrap is thick enough to avoid marring but also sticks well to avoid movement (to cause a scratch). I wouldn't recommend leaving it on for more than a couple days or on a freshly painted surface.

Yep that is the one. Texted Mike and he confirmed. Regarding Monster.....yea that would have been nice. For the short time I drove the car after it was all back together, everything was a little notchy at first but after some miles, it's gotten better and better. It finally hit that sweet spot within about 50 miles on it so I expect that to continue.

Nothing too exciting here but figured I'd post a brief update.

Item 1:
I was chasing a P0327 code for a low input (sensor or circuit issue) which I don't know if its resolved but I've done everything reasonable to fix the issue. I replaced the knock sensor which didn't solve the problem but after further sleuthing, I found some wires (including the knock sensor wire) got a little toasty next to the passenger header. I think things just got moved around during the HG replacement a few weeks back. Purple is the starter wire and the blue is the knock sensor.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50355459938_5526b88d22_z.jpg

None of the wires in the bundle were visibly burnt and some multimeter testing didn't identify an issue either. Since I was there, I decided to splice and solder in a new wire while wrapping everything in heat resistant material to avoid a future issue. Everything was re-run away from the header with all of the zip ties. I cleaned the sensor connector as well just to rule out as many variables as possible.

The code came back again after all that so more diagnosing was needed. With help from Smash, the drivers side plugs were replaced with a fresh set given they were changed on the passenger side when the HG was done. Plugs looked fine overall however they were all gapped way too tight (0.020ish vs 0.0275). I'm pretty diligent when it comes to gapping plugs properly so no clue how that happened.

More driving and while it felt fine, the code still came back.

I then checked over every wire from injectors to spark plugs and it seems my #4 cylinder spark plug wire may not have been clicked all the way on the plug.

I haven't seen the code come back but sometimes it takes a few running cycles. Maybe its resolved or perhaps the saga will continue. (EDIT - Took it for a ride and it came back. Ack!)

Item #2
The factory steering wheel/airbag combo is ugly and none of the re-wrapping options I've seen help it to look any better. So it was time to embrace racecar a bit more and replace the wheel with a new unit sans airbag. One part of me wanted to retain the bag but the other suggests I shouldn't trust an 23 year old airbag anyway. Decisions were made and for my bday, I received the NRG short hub and quick disconnect. For the wheel, I grabbed a 350mm Sparco that appeared to best fit the style of the interior.

After some coaching from Smash regarding the install rigor and reading up, I got to work. I've pulled the wheel before so nothing was new there but I took pause when the short hub did not want to go deep enough on the steering column splines.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50356315582_305b31ba8e_z.jpg

It became evident the clock spring needed to go. Given it would only be used for the now nonexistent steering wheel airbag and radio controls, out it went. I soldered in a 2.2k ohm resistor to keep the airbag system happy (and no light on the dash). and finished up the install. One annoying item was not getting hardware to install the wheel to the quick disconnect so a run to the hardware store was needed.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50356315552_426052b814_z.jpg

After I got it all buttoned up, I liked the look/wheel size/etc. but wasn't loving the new wheel position. The quick disconnect just brings it too far out from the dash. Granted the distance did give me a bit more room for the clutch leg so that was probably the only plus. I told myself, "Drive it and see if you get used to it." I took it for a maiden voyage and immediately noticed the steering effort was much higher and felt like driving a car with no power steering. Seems I tightened down the nut for the column a bit too tight even though I measured the release torque and matched it during install.

Foresight was on my side in a funny way as I spent a good deal of time getting the horn to function properly. I haven't used the horn in maybe 5+ years but I just wanted it to be functional. On my maiden voyage with the new wheel, I had to use the horn big time due to a NY minivan casually coming into my lane on 287. I wasn't in their blindspot and you would think the person would hear my car but nope....not a turn of the head nor any peripheral vision apparently. There was a quick panic as I steered to avoid an issue and a smirk as my muscle memory had me going for the horn as if the old wheel was there.

I ended up ditching the quick disconnect but needed a short spacer to give enough room for the horn button connections so that was installed yesterday. The placement is pretty perfect now.

I got a couple quick errands done and the lighting looked right for a quick picture.

The saga will continue.....

nice update. I am wondering about the false-knock you are getting, but I am not skilled/smart enough to diagnose a problem like that. I wonder what larry has to say about it?

I like the look of the new wheel. never thought about one with a quick-release adding length to the column, but that makes sense. Good to keep in mind if I ever go that route. agree about the horn. Mine stopped working way back in like 2012 or so, but when I did the Optima Batteries USCA event, they deduct points if you don't have a working horn. I hadn't really needed to use it in many years, but i took the time to troubleshoot the problem and got it working prior to the event. it has been fine ever since, and I have indeed actually had to use it since then. I'm sure your muscle memory will play tricks on you for some time to come.

Quick update. Still getting the P0327 knock sensor low input code. Car drives perfectly fine but I see the 3.9 degs of knock retard on part/full throttle with load on the engine. Revving it in place doesn't trigger it unless I really just whack the the throttle but it's inconsistent. This makes me think that under load, the drivetrain is flexing like it will and something is touching/tapping.

Maybe something shifted just ever so slightly when the pan was done since the K member/motor mounts were unbolted. Something may be touching that wasn't before causing audible noise. Both driver and passenger lifter preload was redone recently so I guess she needs to go back in the air to see what may be causing the knock sensor to trigger.

An update and a bit more mystery to this knock sensor issue.

- Codes cleared a couple days ago, car not driven until yesterday.

- Start up, give it 30 secs or so to warm a little. Took it out for an easy drive.

- Very light throttle, soft upshifts etc as everything gets up to temperature. No knock retard shown on scanner.

- Take it on the highway, fully warmed up. No knock retard (KR) with any throttle - 0-70%. Played with it in different gears and rpms, no knock retard. It would have typically showed KR in these situations given my view of the scanner on prior drives.

- Almost home now after probably 20+ miles with no KR showing at any point. I goose it a bit in 1st and part of 2nd. Now I am seeing knock retard of 3.9 degrees pop up with any moderate throttle. Doesn't trigger it at light throttle or idle. No CEL popped up just yet but I know it will eventually.

So my quick take is something is getting unhappy or triggering KR after I decide to get saucy and from then on out, it registers KR at any moderate part throttle.

1. Because I don't tune cars.

2. Not applicable.

3. Engine sounds good other than a tick under load/throttle when the bypass starts to close. Sounds like an exhaust leak but new gaskets etc maybe that's something else. I used a mech stethoscope and didn't hear any ticking from up top or below when I prodded various areas of the engine. During the initial easy drive and heavier throttle before getting saucy, makes the noise and didn't trigger KR.

Winter maintenance is underway. A lot of "here we go again" vibes but needs to be done.

- Address leaks - RMS, oil pan, powersteering and whatever else I find
- Replace tires
- General cleaning, fluid changes etc.
- Install some minor new parts
- Replace oil packed muffler

RMS/rear of oil pan have been leaking for a good amount of time and generally it was a few drops (std SBC things...) but it got significantly worse this past year so it was time.

Transmission yanked, kmember dropped and pan pulled.

Next up was the powersteering pump - I'd say this was leaking for a while. I had wanted to try the Detroit Speed rack but its the 98-02 style so after test fitting with a rough unit I got off Facebook, unfortunately the steering shaft will hit my procharger inlet pipe (130 deg stainless elbow). I could consider modifying the inlet but since this isn't a car intended for curvy roads, its fine. I did replace the pump and lines with all fresh fluid of course.

Changed the spark plugs as well with some fresh units. Old ones didn't look bad but a couple had a slightly wider gap than I would prefer.

Doing some exhaust cleaning and replacing the muffler in hopes of getting rid of the "black spit" for 20 secs after startup. Doesn't do anything bad but make a mess.

More to come.... May have a surprise package coming this week for the car as well.

id say the exhaust is hitting or something causing the false knock. i would disable the knock sensor except for wot values and limit it based on rpm.

i mean if you go holley, it goes away anyway.

Any update warrior? Assuming leak free and a calendar full of car show dates?

Right. Exhaust seems to only have super tight clearance getting over the axle but otherwise seems clear everywhere else.

Photobucket is being a piece of trash so no pics right now but here is a run down for the peanut gallery.

- Everything is back together, runs, drives!

- New tires were purchased installed all around. I ended up with the same tire sizes as prior (285/30 Fr, 305/30 R) and selected Nankang CR-S V2s for front and the new Hoosier Track Attack Pros. Prior tires were Nitto Invos up front and Toyo R888 (R888Rs weren't out when I first purchased). Front tires are overkill for how I use the car but given I don't put a ton of miles on it, why not have the grip.

- Repolished the CCWs - They are exposed aluminum and while looked good, I know they could be better. Took my wheels to two places that polish wheels and both basically turned me away. Ended up just buying a new polishing product and giving it a go myself.

- UMI upper panhard bar replaced...just cause everything else is "upgraded"

- Removed years of rubber from the rear fender wells. Pulling off layers of cooked rubber was oddly cathartic

- Installed replacement magnaflow bullet muffler for the mufflex system. For those unaware, the car would spit black specks on start-up until the exhaust was warmed enough. Drove me nuts and I was convinced the muffler must be packed with the horrors of my oil consumption issues in the past. Since replacing the muffler and mild cleaning on the inside of the Y pipe etc., she isn't spitting black anymore. I cut the old muffler open and the insulation was totally coated so I'd say that was the smoking gun.

Drove the car this past weekend and everything worked as it should. I had initially planned to ease into the power however an enthusiastic Toyota FR-S driver "forced" me to break the rear tires in sooner than expected as I got onto 195. I took a peek under the car yesterday and everything looks dry....fingers crossed, knock on wood, pray to the car gods etc.

Currently debating replacement for the very old yellow top battery (10 yrs old?) which has served me well but I think this is getting a little "tired". May go with a red top replacement, another yellow or another brand.

Oh and to add - I semi-impulsively purchased a Holley Dominator, harness and other items from EFI Connection (guys who sold me the 24x 0411 setup on the OG Blower Build).

Main reason to head in that direction is ease of tuning, ability to reduce various controllers for items like the trans pump, 2 step, etc, and safety features. My biggest nitpick was making sure I retained the factory cluster. I like the big holley screens but I haven't seen a bezel setup that would go with....plus this isn't a race car.

I wouldn't recommend an Optima. They haven't been made in the USA for a long time.

Deka and Odyssey are the cat's meow. You could spend 3 times the amount to save half a pound in weight.
