Removing a Crank pulley!?

How do I remove the crank pulley and balancer? Head are off the motor as well as intake and all the other front belt setup. Just cant figure out how to remove the crank pulley, it just spins the crank when I try to unbolt it, I tried using another socket on the middle bolt and tried to push one one way and the other socket the other way but it wont budge. Any tips would be awsome.
Thanks guys,
Jeremy

And if anyone local wants to give me a hand thatd be cool too!!

use a impact

then when you get the pulley off, use a harmonic balancer puller on the balancer

Dont have either of those two tools. Basic tools here.
now autozone lets you borrow the puller, but what can I do about not having an impact gun?

The Fixer 06-26-2008 07:24 PM

You can probably put a breaker bar on the flexplate to stop the crank from spinning. Good luck!

Jersyboyy 06-26-2008 07:51 PM

Good idea but that makes me wonder about breaking the flex plate? Is it safe?

why not just put the car in gear??? i know its automatic but it should work...i used to just jam my old tbird in 4th when doing the crank pulley. as for pullers, you can get a generic ducks foot puller for like 15 bucks...and they work on steering wheels too. just make sure the bolts are tightened down evenly....unless the crank pulley on your motor needs a jaw style puller.

TheBandit 06-27-2008 10:35 AM

jersyyboy i have an impact gun if you need it. i may have a puller too let me look. My dad has a good of tools so if you need anything just ask man.

Jersyboyy 06-27-2008 01:10 PM

Bandit that would be awsome if you could stop by today with both. But I dont have an air compressor for that impact gun dude.

deadtrend1 06-27-2008 03:31 PM

go buy a cheap electric impact .. it will work. 50-60 bucks and your set.

Jersyboyy 06-27-2008 06:11 PM

If it spins when the trans is in park, what makes you think that putting it in gear will change anything :). The torque converter will let the motor spin forever.

X2, all you are doing is spinning the converter and the pump, it isn't like a manual

Good point justin. After 2 seconds under the hood I figured that out and decided to jam the flexplate. Got the pulley off now im just figuring out how to remove the balancer with ou a puller.

Don't even try.....go rent a puller from Autozone or something.

Yea thats what im about to do. I think i found a cam that I want to use too. Any ideas on using a used cam? Bad Good, not so bad? The guy has Matching lifters and they were saved in order.

Tru2Chevy 06-28-2008 06:44 PM

I wouldn't bother with a used flat tappet cam, even with the lifters saved.

Care to elaborate as to why exactly?

The risk of mixing something up and wiping a lobe on the cam isn't worth it IMO. Do that and it's often rebuild time :)

guess ill spend double and get the cam and lifters from summit. Thanks bud
