Oil smells like gas?

I finally got the oil pan gasket in (w00t, Felpro stuff is hawt), and I was draining the oil. I JUST put it in the day before the BBQ. Now, while some...ok, most of the oil was pissed out of and onto the headers causing a crop dusting situation, I still had some in the pan. When I drained it...it smelt like gas? and it was BLACK!! It smelt almost like diesel oil.
WTF is going on here?
Now, when I drained it for teh oil change last friday, no gas smell from oil.
Possible rings being shot?

Car may run really rich causing gas to get in the oil. Not a good situation.

what kind of carb? it might be leaking

JSPERFORMANCE 07-24-2008 10:27 PM

sounds like a carb issue to me.

BigAls87Z28 07-24-2008 10:45 PM

Edelbrock 600cfm electric choke

johnjzjz 07-25-2008 07:43 AM

dont know what kind of car or motor but if it has a mechanical fuel pump the diaphragm in it can start to leak causing fuel to enter the oil pan , jz

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2008 08:30 AM

Its a 350 with a 600cfm carb in a 72 Camaro
Oo...good thinking John. It does have a mechanical fuel pump. Im thinking it has more to do with the carb as the thing stinks of gas.

In other news...anyone know where I can get some oil pan bolts too? One is rounded off.

BonzoHansen 07-25-2008 08:56 AM

Someone has to have some laying around. I have a whole bunch, but you are kind of far to drive for a few $0.02 bolts. I could bring some to Jackson tonight if you'll be in the area.

Are you changing the oil pan gasket? The nice fel pro one comes with new (longer) bolts

LTb1ow 07-25-2008 09:07 AM

If you swap gaskets on mine, I'll let you keep a few bolts.

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2008 09:14 AM

I got the 1 pc gasket, but it did not come with bolts. This gasket has a metal core around the sides so you dont over torque.
Ill just have to inspect the local pep boys. I also dropped the pan ALLLLLLL over my driveway, which is how I know it smelt like gas, so I need to pick up 5 qts of engine oil. That, and Im gunna put on the stocker valve covers.

BonzoHansen 07-25-2008 09:22 AM

Huh, mine came with bolts - they are longer than stock. was the package open? maybe we got different ones.

LTb1ow 07-25-2008 09:24 AM

Mine came with the funny plastic ones, but no hardware.

V 07-25-2008 09:29 AM

yea i had an 84 z28 that was leaking fuel at the mechanical fuel pump right into the crankcase. thinned the oil so much that it wasted a rod bearing. i found the cause, fixed it by getting a new fuel pump and the bearing and all was good.

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2008 10:49 AM

Nope. Ill check..but I didnt see any bolts. If they did, that would have been awesome.

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2008 11:17 AM

Neg, went through the whole box, no bolts. You had my hopes up there for a sec....

chrisfrom nj 07-25-2008 02:58 PM

the fuel pump diafram or the carb is running too rich

BigAls87Z28 07-25-2008 03:13 PM

Oil pan bolts are in, RTV Blacked thehell out of the passanger side vavle cover gasket which is where the leak was coming from. Ill wait a bit till the RTV cures. The tube says 24 hrs. but Im gunna give it half that time.
