Oil smells like gas?

I finally got the oil pan gasket in (w00t, Felpro stuff is hawt), and I was draining the oil. I JUST put it in the day before the BBQ. Now, while some...ok, most of the oil was pissed out of and onto the headers causing a crop dusting situation, I still had some in the pan. When I drained it...it smelt like gas? and it was BLACK!! It smelt almost like diesel oil.
WTF is going on here?
Now, when I drained it for teh oil change last friday, no gas smell from oil.
Possible rings being shot?

Car may run really rich causing gas to get in the oil. Not a good situation.

dont know what kind of car or motor but if it has a mechanical fuel pump the diaphragm in it can start to leak causing fuel to enter the oil pan , jz

Its a 350 with a 600cfm carb in a 72 Camaro
Oo...good thinking John. It does have a mechanical fuel pump. Im thinking it has more to do with the carb as the thing stinks of gas.

In other news...anyone know where I can get some oil pan bolts too? One is rounded off.

Someone has to have some laying around. I have a whole bunch, but you are kind of far to drive for a few $0.02 bolts. I could bring some to Jackson tonight if you'll be in the area.

Are you changing the oil pan gasket? The nice fel pro one comes with new (longer) bolts

If you swap gaskets on mine, I'll let you keep a few bolts.

I got the 1 pc gasket, but it did not come with bolts. This gasket has a metal core around the sides so you dont over torque.
Ill just have to inspect the local pep boys. I also dropped the pan ALLLLLLL over my driveway, which is how I know it smelt like gas, so I need to pick up 5 qts of engine oil. That, and Im gunna put on the stocker valve covers.

yea i had an 84 z28 that was leaking fuel at the mechanical fuel pump right into the crankcase. thinned the oil so much that it wasted a rod bearing. i found the cause, fixed it by getting a new fuel pump and the bearing and all was good.
