GM lets you build your own Corvette engine

http://jalopnik.com/5584808/gm-will-...orvette-engine

But only if it's a Z06/ZR1

Frosty 07-12-2010 11:47 AM

So would I get to stand around like the union guys too? :D

That's a pretty cool option, does anyone else do that?

Mike 07-12-2010 11:47 AM

what does it mean for your warranty?

Frosty 07-12-2010 12:06 PM

Good question. I would think that the GM tech would be there to check all tolerances and stuff....right? lol

"Basically, the buyer will be doing the work and a GM tech will make sure nothing gets screwed up. "

FlyingDutchman 07-12-2010 12:10 PM

Looks like fun, but I wonder what happens warranty wise ??

Squirrel 07-12-2010 12:11 PM

oh... its a 5800 dollar added cost also to build your own engine...

Same warranty as pro built. I guess it is another way to make more money and get more of a following.

V 07-12-2010 06:02 PM

DaSkinnyGuy 07-12-2010 07:56 PM

Sign me up, I know i could do it with very little help

V 07-12-2010 08:47 PM

i wonder what theyd do if as your building the motor, you just start hammering on it with a large object, and start yelling at it...

BigAls87Z28 07-12-2010 08:50 PM

The engines are hand built anyway, so there arent exactly people standing around. Two people work on each engine.

GM only has two people making engines?

BigAls87Z28 07-12-2010 09:38 PM

EACH engine...each.
The engine "craftsman" that GM calls them, build these motors in a special plant in Wixom. Two per engine.

So they only sell one engine at a time?

Geez, no wonder they are slacking at car sales.... :-?

Tru2Chevy 07-12-2010 09:45 PM

Sounds awesome. If I had the cash to spend over $70k for a Z06, I would definitely plop down another $5800 to fly out to Wixom and build my own LS7.

Basic ideas about the program, some outlined above already:

You get to pick which day you do the assembly from a 2 week period GM gives you, usually approximately 1 month after the order date.

You do a large part of the assembly work, with the GM tech right there helping

After it's built, the tech attaches the placard with the builder info, and sends it off to be dyno tested.

GM documents the process, and gives you a flash drive with pics (and video?)

Warranty is unchanged - still 5 years / 100k miles

BigRocsFirebird 07-12-2010 10:19 PM

can you change things like a bigger cam and such?

BigAls87Z28 07-12-2010 10:26 PM

No, the parts are hand picked prior to your assembly. They have let people do this before, and when they first opend Wixom, they let auto-writers build a few LS7's at first.

BigRocsFirebird 07-12-2010 10:37 PM

nice they have plenty of power already and sound great. i think i'm a little to young to get a z06 maybe when i'm a little older.

greenformula92 07-12-2010 10:38 PM

if you can afford one of those cars you can afford the option....i would do it

BigAls87Z28 07-12-2010 10:51 PM

I wonder if they would let you do that if you just wanted to buy the crate?

BigRocsFirebird 07-12-2010 10:52 PM

i have a pretty nice income for my age i got lucky working with my dad full time but i could only afford it if i can set it up that i make payments every week or something like that. i don't have the money all at once. i have no idea with them corvettes. can you make payments every month or so?

Yes, you can finance the car. Not many people buy cars up front, in cash.

You could finance the car through your bank or through GMAC.

hmm.. thanks Al.

I don't think I will get one anytime soon since i bought a mustang a couple months back and I have the firebird still. I would love to own a Z06.

If I would have known about this a couple months ago i would have looked into financing one. Builds credit right? i'm only 18 as of today so i still have time to get one one of these days:-P
