GM lets you build your own Corvette engine

But only if it's a Z06/ZR1

So would I get to stand around like the union guys too?

That's a pretty cool option, does anyone else do that?

Good question. I would think that the GM tech would be there to check all tolerances and stuff....right? lol

Same warranty as pro built. I guess it is another way to make more money and get more of a following.

i wonder what theyd do if as your building the motor, you just start hammering on it with a large object, and start yelling at it...

The engines are hand built anyway, so there arent exactly people standing around. Two people work on each engine.

EACH engine...each.
The engine "craftsman" that GM calls them, build these motors in a special plant in Wixom. Two per engine.

So they only sell one engine at a time?

Geez, no wonder they are slacking at car sales....

Sounds awesome. If I had the cash to spend over $70k for a Z06, I would definitely plop down another $5800 to fly out to Wixom and build my own LS7.

Basic ideas about the program, some outlined above already:

You get to pick which day you do the assembly from a 2 week period GM gives you, usually approximately 1 month after the order date.

You do a large part of the assembly work, with the GM tech right there helping

After it's built, the tech attaches the placard with the builder info, and sends it off to be dyno tested.

GM documents the process, and gives you a flash drive with pics (and video?)

Warranty is unchanged - still 5 years / 100k miles

- Justin

No, the parts are hand picked prior to your assembly. They have let people do this before, and when they first opend Wixom, they let auto-writers build a few LS7's at first.

Yes, you can finance the car. Not many people buy cars up front, in cash.

You could finance the car through your bank or through GMAC.

hmm.. thanks Al.

I don't think I will get one anytime soon since i bought a mustang a couple months back and I have the firebird still. I would love to own a Z06.

If I would have known about this a couple months ago i would have looked into financing one. Builds credit right? i'm only 18 as of today so i still have time to get one one of these days
