Starbucks closing 600 underperforming stores in the United States
SEATTLE (AP) -- Starbucks Corp. has announced it's closing 600 underperforming stores in the United States. The Seattle-based premium coffee company also announced Tuesday it expects to open fewer than 200 new company-operated stores in the United States in fiscal 2009.
The company says it will try to place workers from closed stores in remaining Starbucks.

Well that's what they get, in State College PA we have two of their stores almost next to each other. They are about 1/4 mile apart, what sense does that make?

Exactly. I hope they all close. Their regular coffee tastes like watered down tar, and I don't go for all the over-priced foofoo crap. I had it yesterday only 'cause it was the only thing open at 6am beyond security at Continental's terminal A at EWR. Next time I take that flight I'm going to terminal C to have breakfast and get coffee, and take the shuttle to A just to avoid the torture of having to drink that crap.

not to mention its a lot of money for what you get. In this economy, who is going to spend 5bucks on a coffee?

Business wise it can make sense... the more distribution, the more your name is out there, the more people end up buying from you.

Until the expenses outweigh the profits.

Or they just go to Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds or go on Campus and buy a coffee.

when your paying $4 for coffee, do you wanna wait in line? its for convenience. they believe that people will stop paying premium money for drinks if it is not a completely pleasant experience. i'm reading a book on starbucks right now and as a fan of their stuff, i am dissappointed by this. i regularly study there and was enjoying their overexpansion which resulted in empty cafes and better customer service

I don't think I've ever been to a Starbucks. $4 for a coffee could explain why! They have way too many stores anyway. I still like the Simpson's episode when they go to the mall and every store is a Starbucks! Doh!

Well
1. I would never pay for coffee because I do not like it, so to me Starbucks is pointless.
2. Obviously people are not willing to pay for their coffee at this particular time, otherwise they would not be closing so many store...

Inferior vs. Superior goods.

Money is tight for a lot of people. For two cups of Starbucks coffee you can buy a pound of Dunkin Donuts grounds and brew a lot more than two cups of decent tasting coffee.

I remember back in January I was VERY surprised when Starbucks lowered their prices.

i can't get down with dunkin donuts coffee to be honest. i think it tastes awful. most of the time its homemade coffee or convenience store coffee (green mountain coffee is A+).

i just want to explain something really quick. starbucks knows their coffee isn't worth the money. its the experience your paying for. it really attacks your senses when your there. the warm cup, the attractive decor, the coffee aroma, the whir of the espresso machine, and of course the taste of the coffee. there isn't many other places you can take a lady friend for a quick chat, read a book, or meet with friends. its really more of a social event than a cup of joe. forget the coffee for a minute and i challenge you all to find me a cafe or any other establishment that offers a similar experience that is as warm and comforting as a starbucks...

i am not a fan of starbucks either, infact i had it once and it sucked. the sad part is that 600 stores of a major coffee chain are closing which means thousands more people will be out of a job. times are tight.

Well with less than 10 seconds of thinking... Panera. I can even eat there, if I so desire.

First off, its 2.50 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, and if you like coffee its good stuff.
Its maybe a dollar less at Wawa or other places, and it doesnt taste as good.
Im not a big coffee drinker if at all, but DD's is no better then a regular cup of Starbucks price wise.

Yea I think Paneras are a lot more rare in most places. I can only think of one in school vs quite a few starbuck's around town.

Um..Actually I can't think of any starbuck's around me here, but there are two Paneras. I guess they are not as rare as i thought...
