My new Beast (pics)

For any of you who have been following the thread over on Nasty Z28, I've decided to go for it and I'm picking this baby up tomorrow. It's a 1968 GMC K3500 with a rebuilt 350 sbc, Eaton rear and Dana 60 front diff. Tell me whatcha think.

Umm. Let's see.

1) Hide it from my wife for as long as I can

2) Lower it by 3" (take out the body lift) so I can get into it without a running start

3) Go off-roading!

4) Swap in a turbo diesel drivetrain and throw on some sweet, sweet stacks

The suspension is "custom" (that means jerry rigged to hell) and the front diff needs gears, but the body is totally rust-free and the frame has been stripped and POR-15'd. The engine is a pretty high-winding little thing (only three years since the speed shop put it together) with a big lopey cam that doesn't make much power down low, but I guess the 4.56 gears help move those swampers. Plus I talked the guy down about 400 bucks so I'm happy.

Thanks Rich. I actually haven't updated my profile, but I live in Englishtown now (you may have heard of it). The only thing it really needs is for that God awful body lift to come off and new gears set up up front. I don't wanna tackle setting up the gears myself though.

LOL! You know that scene from the original Fast and the Furious where those civics drive under the truck? I'm pretty sure they could do it for real with this thing. But not before I remove some ricer stickers with the exhaust dumps! And oh ye of little faith Bonzo. The Camaro is still number one but I want something fun to drive this winter. Plus it's already very close to how I want it.

Would that thing need stability papers and such??? Body looks good, which is the real bitch with older iron....the rest is easy.

What diesel drivetrain ya considering? Cummins or Duramax or Powerstroke?? That would be a killer deal in a beast like that.

Looks sweet....lifted trucks are definitely a lot of fun and with the frame being POR'd already your protected good for winter. Might want to undercoat the body panels as well for added durability. Just watch for black ice still......I almost flipped mine 2 years ago on 78 because I lost it on black ice and caught traction while I was completely sideways....felt the two left side tires leave the ground and land again.....scary high center of gravity.

Ahh, but that's the beauty of it. No tilt test required when you register it as a collector vehicle. I confirmed this with both the DMV and Parsons. The only test it has to pass is the functional odometer test.

I'm torn between diesels. I'd like to go with a Cummins cause they're indestructible, but I might have an easier time with a Duramax (and it keeps it all Chevy). Then I could run it on french fry grease. Any suggestions?

Funny. It's about as high as I can stand it right now. I literally rolled my ankle getting out of this thing cuz I landed on an uneven spot on the ground.

How are you going to register it as a collector vehicle and drive it? You can't drive the vehicle to work or for errands if it's a collector. And it surely wouldn't qualify if driving in snow. That is one scary dangerous looking lift setup as well. The body looks great, but it needs a lot of work to make it safe. And if you do need to do the stability test to make it a daily driver, that will cost some money to set up right. It might make a great farm vehicle, but be prepared for $$ to get it on the road. I'm sure that's why the guy is selling it.
