if anyone doesnt beleive my mileage for the civic, heres why is so highi now reside in Beaufort SC, the avg speed limit down here is 55 to 60mph, i hit only 2 traffic lights and 2 stop signs on my way to work. and its flat, except for the bridges over the rivers/marshes/highways. so yea its easy to get high mpgs down here

with that sonic car, the mileage should improve as more stuff breaks in, my uncle took his brand new liberty down the mrytle beach back in july, he avg only 17-18. on the way home he said he was gettin nearly 22mpg, he added another couple thousand miles to the jeep on the way down and driving around down there.

I reset the trip odometer and record all the gas, oil changes, any type of maintenance/changes and watch the mpg. Like Scott said, a drop will indicate something isn't right (unless it's winter gas). I know I'll never see great mpg with any vehicle with my daily commute. Normally 45 mph and less with multiple traffic lights all jammed into a 10 minute drive. So the vehicle barely gets up to temp. I've averaged 14 to 17.5 mpg in the winter between V8, V6 and 4 cyl vehicles so I can't complain about a V8 4WD truck getting 14 mpg when the 4 cyl 4WD truck only got 17.5 mpg. And now I need the V8 for towing the heavier boat/trailer so it's a moot point.

Except that my commute on Rt 80 is so irregular with regards to traffic that my mileage can swing wildly from tank to tank.

They usually shut down the refineries around this time to clean the tanks and do maintenance as they prepare to switch over to the normal gas. So the supply shrinks which runs up prices and with oil going up and lots of speculation, it's like the perfect storm to create an artificial spike in prices. But it will probably take a month to use up the supply of winter gas.
