Well, if it's OBDI you'll still need to pass smog. Most times the inspectors won't bother you if you have a catted y-pipe (even though they aren't in the factory location).

I haven't personally taken a car with long tubes through inspection, but I know several people who have (not just random people from different forums) and haven't had issues as long as they have a catted Y.

Nothing is a guarantee once you start modifying - if you get an inspector that wants to be a stickler, sure, he or she will probably fail it. But most don't care as long as cats are there.

Ok cool cool, I have till next June to have fun with the combo now, and then hopefully I will have enough money to drop in a 355/blower combo with a more emissions friendly cam. And can I email anyone my pics? I cannot edit them to make them the right size to post.

You can email them to me, or just upload them to Photobucket or Imageshack.

Or download this: http://www.irfanview.com/ (great image viewer and basic editor)

Any thoughts on the "guaranteed pass emissions" stuff?

How did you manage to fail? You don't even get a sniff test, right?

yeah if you clear it, you reset all of the monitors in the car and you fail. you can have up to 2 systems "not ready" and pass as long as everything else is good and you don't have emission codes set.

guaranty to pass and the like won't help you if you are cammed, barely work in stockers. better off making friends with a private inspector.

Mac mid length or ASM headers will keep the cats closer to the stock location and offer almost as much power as longtubes without the headache of less ground clearance if you lower the car. I put Pacesetter longtubes on my old 96 SS with dual high flow cats but ended up selling the car before going through inspection. That was OBDII anyway and the computer wasn't throwing any codes so it probably would have passed.

Mid lengths will actually sacrifice a rough 10 rwhp at peak rpm compared to longtubes.

George Baxter had no problem making 700+ hp with his ASM midtubes so don't believe the stories about longtubes making a lot more power. If the longtubes are 1-7/8 vs the 1-3/4 midtubes then you'll see a bigger difference but if they're both 1-3/4 then it's really close. You get better ground clearance with midtubes if the car is lowered as well.

Its not the Mids vs LTs, its more of the size of the collectors.
