D@m, I hate property taxes!

I just got our new escrow analysis and once again our property taxes have gone up. When we bought the house 11 years ago the property taxes were around $3600 a year. We're now at $6800 a year, but they pulled out the sewer portion a couple of years ago and that runs around $200 so we're really at $7000 a year. I know there are people paying a lot more than that, but we have relatively small 3 bedroom split level with jsut 1-1/2 baths, a partial basement, no fireplace. Gotta love Joisey!

Yeah, but I don't see the increase in my payments until my escrow analysis which gets done in Nov. I should move back in with mom and dad and just pay rent, it's a lot cheaper!

Bah, you guys should move to Bergen County. My 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom Colonial on a whopping 50'x100' piece of property is now at ~$8K per year. I hate Jersey more than you!

Bill, parts of Bergen County are just so screwed up it's incredible. My town is in the middle of a major crisis and reform because of how these asshats assessed our houses and land values. There's a guy across town from me (2 miles away) with 40'x98' of property, and his land value alone is $230K. My 50'x100' property is only worth $170K, yet I have 20 MORE sq.ft. than him. Something is obviously Fcked up!

Kasey, I feel your parents' pain, believe me.

And as you get older how can anyone afford to retire in the areas!??

I faced the same thing when I lived in Langhorne PA, 4 bed colonial on .4 acres was almost 5g's a year. Â* Â*

Well UB may call me a Pennsyltucky hillbilly from Central PA, Â*But Â*now living in the country my colonial - 3 BRs, 3 baths, full basement, oversized 2 car garage sits on 2 acres and I pay under $1,500. Â*so at least I can afford to retire some day!

( can I also mention no I live exactly 1 miles from Numidia drag strip! ) Â*

within the last five years our household income went from over 100K per year to +/- 35k. if you removed property taxes from the equation we could actually exist, because of where we live and how cheaply we got into our house. but if the property tax scale continues we will be taxed right out of here. it fits into my plans to leave this place, just not quite so quickly.

i would not be able to begin to express how two people would be able to retire, either in a retirement community or in regular housing. $24k per year in social security (assuming they get the max) and some retirement income (assuming they had it before most companies dd away with it) certainly doesn't add up to much. if the house is paid off then they might be able to do it...

oh, and don't get me started on gas prices. they're still over $2/gallon.
