if it's not shifting check the tranny fluid level...that's a transmission problem

car is hesitant on start-up? any other details? i'd scan the codes and go from there

Def sounds like an Opti problem. I had a similiar problem before I started work on my car, and once there was a new Opti, plugs, wires, and blaster coil it started on one turn of the key.

Brown? That's not good. Sounds like it definetly has something to do with your problem.

as far as the starting problem, can you hear the fuel pump prime if you jsut turn the key to the run position without starting the car? GMN has a history of using pumps that the anti-drain backs go bad in. so basically it will jsut hold fuel in the line, but not at any pressure.
turn the key to the run position, count to 5, then start the car. if it is jsut the drain back on the pump that should solve it.

so instead of fixing a problem, the car will be parted out? ooo...k

If thats the stock opti, and it lasted 150,000 miles, im amazed. usually 120k is pushing the life of the opti
