Are NJ car owners allowed to block off GARDEN STATE with a license plate frame?

I'm about to buy a personalized rear license plate frame for my GTO, but I'm not sure if it will be legal or not to cover the GARDEN STATE portion of the license plate. Does anybody know? Thanks in advance for the info.

Nope, it's not legal, but the chances of you being ticketed for it are probably slim.

it is part of federal highway law that no portion of any lettering anywhere on a licenese plate can be obstructed or covered. same in all 50 states. you will only catch grief for it if the cop is trying to make a useless point by finding a ticket to give you or you do something to piss him off.

Put the cover on. If yer nice to the cop who pulls you over for going 77 in a 65, he may give you a ticket for the license plate cover instead of the speeding ticket.
I uh... am just guessing about that one.

Thanks for the replies. Because of this post, I decided that I won't use a personalized license frame. I'm already driving without a front license plate so getting pulled over for obstructing the rear plate with a license plate frame might be an automatic two tickets. I'll probably just end up using a regular, thin license plate frame or one of those frames that are just wide on the sides.

i got stopped for the frame, z28, but the cop was cool about it. he started giving me crap about my inspection but noticed i was doing it legally and out of nowhere he asked me what i had done to the motor. he continued on that he has a 85 monte with some work. that had to be the best time i ever got stopped by a cop lol
