ZoneAlarm works pretty good for a free firewall. I used it for a few years.

i don't use software based firewalls (execpt the one that XP has). hardware based it better, like a router. it changes the IP Address of the Pc (default 192.168.x.x) so that it can't been seen from the outside world. Software can be hacked, it is MUCH HARDER to hack a router.
Watch for "free" pop-up blockers, Ad-Ware removes, ect. They are "free" for a reason. Adaware is good tho. As far as anti-virus, i use Norton. You don;t need to go nuts with their suite deal. the privacy crap and other things they include just cuase more problems and kill your pc's performance. All you need is a good anti-virus and a spy-ware remover (which most anti-virus's detect/remove spyware now anyways), as well as common sense when using your Pc
I have been working with Pc's for yrs, and i have seen/tried it all. don't get sucked into the "security hype" that is goin around

In many cases it isn't a firewall/port blocking problem at all.
A lot of the spyware/adware installs itself as a browser help object. It will get uploaded into your registry and will put phantom DLL's in your Windows/System directory which you can't delete (because they will always be running). If you boot to safe mode and start hacking away at your registry it will re-download the spyware upon first clean boot. If you get something like this basically you are F'd with a capital F and it's easier to reformat.

half the time that doesnt work, somehow the programs record when it was installed and then figure out what date the trial ends on. i still have yet to find where these values are hidden.
as for security the best firewall is a hardware firewall, it takes the load of your computer and as said previously its alot harder to hack. as for anti spyware apps try hitman pro, it runs about 5 or so spyware programs automaticly. it works great as long as youre not running vista
as for non-free programs, who ever said you have to pay for them

In your system registry as registry keys (type regedit from a run bar). If you know how to work with your reg you can get around things like that, but if you mess up it is BAD NEWS.

ive searched for them, and it still doesnt work. for example, diskeeper has one of those 30 day time limits. i deleted all of the keys relating to diskeeper and the any folder relating to it. reinstalled it and the protection was still there
