Buying a used vehical, need help with process?

So I know I need the title signed with address, miliage and selling price, and I bring that with a proof of insurance to the DMV to get plates/registration, but they also said I need a reciept of payment of the taxs on it. Where the hell do I go to pay the tax's on private part sale?? Do I pay the seller directly or do i go somewhere to pay them? And how much is it, is it 7% like the sales tax's or somethin else?

if u didnt get the title n whatnot signed yet, have the guy write a low price like 800 bucks or something (assuming u got it for a few thousend) so that u dont have to pay alot in taxes. my sister got her truck for 4500 bucks and the guy wrote 450 on the title so she payed i think 37 dollars or somethin for taxes

It used to be that this was a good idea, but not anymore. They will investigate you if you put too low an amount in.

You pay the taxes when you try to title it at DMV. They will require their 7% cut at that time. No tax $$, no title. They use the amount the seller writes in on the title to calculate tax.

You can fudge the price, but don't go off the deep end. If you put down $500 for a car with a book value of $8k, you'll get the aforementioned letter.

i don't know that i'd be bragging about breaking the law on a public website like that. you might get a letter, too. or a knock at the door.

$400 for an 86 firebird is easily w/i book value. It would not be for a 2001 Firebird.

the law states that anytime one of the taxed items is sold, the taxes must be collected. thankfully, if you are a private seller you don't have to collect the tax - they do that at the DMV. but it matters not how many times something is sold; when it is sold, taxes are collected.

Then you probably would not be registering it. Even though in his case I could be wrong.

True, but I was thinking just tile transfer since that's where said tax and "official" price come into play

Actually, if it's wrecked then it's legit. They will probably ask you to prove the value, and then you just show the pictures. You will probably get a salvage title for it then as well.
