If you had $10,000 to invest.
What would you invest in? I am thinking verizon. But not the whole thing.
Btw this is for an ongoing history project and the winner will be pronounced at the end of the semester.

Winter is coming, you need a hit by year end. I'd check to oil like XOM or BP. Or natural gas/utilites.

I'm guessing this is some stock market game, so he needs big short term returns.

IRA's are great if you are worried about [protecting money in the last 5 years before retirement. as a young person, be aggressive. emerging technologies, international production companies.......there are a ton of places that you can drop a few thousand and potentially come back with a few million these days. there is the offsetting risk of losing it all overnight too, but that is why people saying "playing the market" instead of "saving in the market"

An IRA is an account type, not an asset type. You can buy all sorts of stuff in one. An IRA in and about itself is not 'safe'.

IRA's are almost always range limtied by whichever investment house is managing your funds. most jsut have pick lists for you to choose off of and don't hand out a whole bunch of info.
IRA's also tend to be weak because they don't make the fund manager anything if you move the money around all the time, so they don't care about them.
any fund manager is much mroe willing to put up with an investors flights of fancy if they have some benefit, the only thing they get if an investor loses money in an IRA is bad press and bad ratings that cause people to pul money out.

Lowes or homedepot. My dad is in the kitchen cabinet business and between lowes and homedepot offering such low rates for kitchens and real estate not moving people are staying put and fixing up not moving up houses...

lowes and home depot stocks are both too slow moving to win any contest that is short term. lowes has announced record earnings 7 consecutive quarters and no one seems to care and home depot is in the slow and painful process of destroying themselves through corporate mismanagement.
for stocks there is no money to be made through the retail side of things. look to technology companies, fuel resource companies, and one fo the big ones that is starting to turn the corner are the diesel engine manufacturers of the world. companies that pay high dividend rates and disperse quarterly are good marks for a school contest because you get to extend your buying power everytime they pay out.
open up the newspaper to the business section and watch what motley fool and cramer are talking about, those guys pick and choose hot button stocks that will make you some money real quick. the key is to get in and out though, don't hang around and wait for the long term look because they only attract transitional buyers that are going to bail and deflate values within the 72 hours of jacking them up.
hey, those 5 years of college are useful after all. lol

optimum word being "quick"... no CD is going to pay what you need to win a contest. rates on 6mo CDs suck the big hairy donkey schlong.

the oil industry is not a good market to play the HS hook your teacher up research, because mobil for example makes a steady 1 billion dollars net profit every day, so that wont be good because its steady, you need to find a get in and get out company

although, the flip side is that oil as a commodity may be a good pick up depending on the term of the game. consumption starts fading off this time of year but around mid winter when they start their supply ramp ups for spring and summer you can really make some money.
commodities cna be a real money maker if you take the time to research all the trends. weather is a key fctor for growth items and consumables like fuel oils, precious metals do not benefit from a bad winter at all, but a nice spring for some reason seems to spark demand. i never got that far into studying commodities, but i ave seen some friends make good money in them.
