Removing exhaust tips

I've decided I want to go for a new single exhaust set-up on my 95' Z. Right now it is mostly an appearance upgrade that I am going for, as I want to loose my large 3.5" Magnaflow exhaust tips for either hidden turn downs off the muffler or spring for a side exit exhaust before the passenger rear tire.

For now will simply removing the exhaust tips off my muffler right now effect the sound of my exhaust?

I have a cut-out for when I want to be loud, and when its flowing through the muffler, it sounds great!

i personally think without tips, an exhaust usually doesn't have as deep of a tone. mostly because tips are usually larger in diameter than the rest of the system i guess. its not a dramatic change, but if you strive to hear it, you will notice. i'd do it though. i'm gettin an slp loudmouth and will either go no tips, stocks if they fit, or cut the rear pipes down and have tips to keep the exhaust semi hidden and look decent. turn downs will give you a lot of reverb from the ground like when going through tunnels or under overpasses which is always fun.

if you are talking about taking the rear pipes out of the muffler, i think thats a bad idea. 1st i think there is a hanger on the d/s pipe.
2nd the heat will build up under the car when you aren't moving causing problems.
a side exit pipe would be sick if you have clearance for it. i'd personally have two tips side by side because its a necessity to me. i'm sure you will come up with something creative that looks good and functions well!

Alex, just get a 3.5" or 4" mufflex catback with a single in/out spintech muffler and a hidden tip. Sounds great, performs great, and you can't really see it at all.

+1 on the mufflex products. I know its money but I always loved the CME with the two large GMMG tips. I think a car looks kinda empty with some kind of exhaust tips.

i saw a post, i think it was over on TGO, that the spintech's sound killer, but flow like crap. Bunch of guys chimed in with some crazy HP gains after they removed the spintech and used something else. One guy was in the neighborhood of 70hp

I've never heard anything like that....only the best about Spintech. I've seen dyno tests showing an '04 GTO gaining ~30 RWHP over stock with no changes besides a Spintech catback.

I'll look around and see if I can find anything else about them.

Wow..that's nuts. I would have expected a straight through type muffler to pick up some, but ~70 hp is crazy.

Spintech mufflers don't look like a good design inside. I think some of the Edelbrock mufflers look similar. I was looking at some muffler flow/sound/power tests the other night and the Dynomax was about the highest flow with the most power and the quietest noise level. I think the Dynomax Ultraflow and Hooker Aerochamber are the best flowing straight through mufflers that aren't obnoxiously loud. I'm sure removing the tips will change the sound to eliminate some of that echo sound but you want to make sure the exhaust gets out from under the car so you might need some temporary tips.

I run spintech mufflers on my IROC, if you go by the math the car makes the same hp with the exhaust on as it does off.
