Speed Racer Mach 5 - 1700hp, 1400ft-lb tq
I have no desire to see the movie, having seen the trailer for it. However the engine in the Mach 5 is certianly impressive.

I think they may mean 7.2. Either that or the whole story is bogus.

Im goign to see it. they have banners for it in Taiwan. It doesnt have to be real to be a good movie. I know the numbers are way off, but you gotta have a little humor.

It ran to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and to the quarter-mile mark in 7.3 sec. Now, it was time for the real fireworks. I pressed the "B" button, meant only for optimum high-performance driving and slippery surfaces. In this mode, the gearbox upshifts automatically and the crampons wrap themselves around the tread of all four tires.
As soon as the Mach 5 leaves the line, you lose consciousness for a split second. Everything goes white, as the sudden onslaught of intense g-forces overwhelms the senses. You'll come to with your eyes open wide as you find yourself already halfway down the drag strip (this may explain why Speed's eyes were always so big and round). You hit 60 mph in just over a half-second. The quarter-mile mark comes and goes in 2.7 sec. at 197.1 mph. Compared to a top-fuel dragster, the Mach 5 is faster off the line — thanks to absolute grip — although the dragster closes the gap a bit once it gets going.
|
that must be a hell of a NOS system yo...
so.. this "B" button, makes it capable for a car to hit 60 mph in roughly .6 seconds (which isn't impossible), but THEN accelerate to ONLY 197.1 mph, yet still be able to cross the 1/4 mile marker at 2.7 seconds..
Being that the first paragraph its 1/4 time is 7.3 seconds, then this miraculous physics defying B button is pressed, I doubt the 2.7 is a typo.. They're tryign to say that a top fueler is slower off the line. A nearly 2400 lb car with supposedly 1700 bhp and a hollywood budget has some how surpassed the R&D of John Force Racing and managed to break time records, yet still remain in the safety zone of sub-200 mph passes.
Yeah, thanks.. try again.

The bullets bounced off the Mach 5's body like hard raindrops, and a race to the border ensued... This last part, and much of everything else, is a re-creation of what may happen in a Speed Racer episode and the upcoming movie. As for driving a real Mach 5, I'll just have to keep pretending.
its ok they had me going to...

Its bogus. There is no way in hell it accelerates faster than a top fuel dragster. So at first they say it goes 0 -60 in 2.7 seconds, then all of a sudden its going 0 - 60 in .5 seconds? Yea, right. Some crappy movie prop car is going to outrun an 8000hp nitro burning dragster. And where are the pics of this great motor? Yea, there are none, because its all hype. Even if it had 1700hp, those tires arent holding it. That "B" button is for bull ****. And putting the info into DeskTop Drag, and trying to see what it would take to get something to go 2.7 in the 1/4 mile, well, it says it needs about 24,000hp.

There was a mach5 on E-bay a few years back, Forget what the frame was based on, but it was powered by a stock LT1/M6 with a fiberglass body. Had the saws that extended, parascope, autojacks, headlights that you be turned etc. none street legal and went for some stupid price. The pics look like the same car. Bet they bought it for the movie. Notice no pics of the so called 1700HP motor?

That was based off of a C4 Corvette. When you buy it you have to agree to some wacky contract about showing the car in public, etc... since you are buying a license.

Remember, it's Road and Track, so the magazine issue dates are always a few months ahead of real time.
