i wish i knew how to react
today my wife call me over to the dining room window to show me something out side .as we're looking a quad goes streaking by on the street. i know of the quad because i see the kid riding it on the street to the open Field 1 house down(a small dirt bike, quad track there). i know of the kid as new to the neighborhood, about 6 months or so (his parents rent a house around the corner) my wife says "thats Sarah on the back of that thing!". i mean this kid(12 of so) has to be doing like 50 or 60 on the street, no helmets or lights or anything. so i look out the window and wait for them to come back (we live in a no outlet community). there he goes by again this time with 3 people (him and 2 passengers)and yes one is my daughter. so my wife says "if i didn't have a few beers in me i get in the car and really give it to him" so me being sober go out side to try to divert disaster and stop this fool kid. as i start my car i hear them coming down the street(wide open i might add) and stand by the side of the road and put up my hand to stop them. well they stop about 50 feet down the road cus hes going so fast, i walk over to them and proceed to let this kid have it verbally. my girl(shes 12) jump off and tells me shes never coming home and storms off and now my wife says i over reacted and I'm wrong. he could have killed her and with no insurance that could be a big problem. his parents have no money . kids don't listen unless you put a little fear in them and i doubt that they will do it again , i can be pretty scary sometimes but better scared than dead. now I'M the bad guy!

quads roll easy. the more weight, the higher the center of gravity. lack of experience, lack of strength, lack of safety gear. what a terrible situation. i think you did the right thing. whats so fun being dead?

Yes, you definately did the correct thing. Why wait until something bad happens to say something? especially with your daughter on the disaster machine.

I agree with Kasey, however if you don't know them well, it will be an uncomfortable discussion.
I would have handled it a little differently - yelling at your daughter doesn't help her learn, it creates hard feelings that a pre-teen will likely harbor as she does something else just to spite you. Better to pull her off and explain why you think its a bad idea (once you are inside the house and away from other eyes and ears), paint a very gruesome picture, then tell her you will be watching her to prevent her from making the same mistake again. Yelling at kids works sometimes, but may also create the opposite reaction from what you want. In this case, chewing her out in front of other kids only creates embarrasment and eventually resentment. Save that stuff for the house.
Good luck!

Another vote for you doing the right thing. Passengers on a quad is always looking for trouble let alone two, and it being your daughter you definitely did the right thing.

i didn't yell at her i yelled at the kid and i guess i embarrassed her in front of her Friends. as far as taking it to the parents, if their so irresponsible as to let their kid run the streets with a quad (forget personal property damage if he hits a car or something ,what about their own kids life) i don't think id get anywhere

Honestly I think the right thing to do would have been to yell at your kid. Forget the one thats driving the quad. If he wants to kill himself thats not your responsibility. Your daughter is what matters and you should be yelling at her/grounding her because its sounds like your a good parent and she made a stupid enough decision to get on that quad.
You cant point fingers and get pissed the kid and his parents. You cant control them or talk sense into them. You should be discussing how dangerous it is with your daughter so that she is smart enough to make the right decision next time johnny 50cc says hey hop on my quad.
I'm 18 and it still pisses me off when my dad yells at random kids for doing stupid ****. We live on a hill and I remember when I was your daughters age he used to go out there and yell it kids flying down the hill on bikes and skateboards. I'd be like dad wtf I'm not doing it why do you have to make a scene.
The important part is that one day your daughter will understand. Type in quad fatalities and find some news articles then fill her in on those. It makes the situation that much more real and really brings the point home for a younger kid.
O yeah just dont start with Jacks, brothers, aunts, nephew from works cousin had that happen to him because my parents still do that and I roll my eyes and say here we go with the he said she said bs again to this day.

Roadrash is the worst scab EVER. It gets all scaly and digs into the skin around it when you bend it UGH. And mine was from falling off a skateboard down hill. I could only imagine 65mph.

I'd have hit the kid with a tire iron, but you seem to have handled the situation just fine

I agree with pretty much everyone else you did the right thing... id also go to the parents and let them know (maybe they think hes just cruising down the street to go to the field) and if he continues to do it call the cops. also talk to your daughter and google quad accidents etc. and show her why you acted the way you did

Tire Iron joke is older then dirt, time to find another joke to ruin bubba.
And I will agree with almost everyone here, you did do the right thing. Your wife even said she wanted to go out there and give a piece of her mind to him, and then she says you overreacted? thats called being a hypocrite. As for yelling at the kid and not your daughter, that too was the right thing to do. Of course she's gonna be mad, she's only 12, she only knows so much thats right from wrong, she hasent developed much of a what are the consequences mind set, so in her mind, you ruined her fun, she wasent thinking about oh what If I fall off, and embarrased her infront of the kids, but personally, I'd rather have a pissed off daughter then one wound up in bandages, or even worse. How old is the kid with the quad? I would say go talk to the parents, but most likely they'll get mad cause your trying to tell them how to raise their kid, and noone likes that, so the best thing to do is to see if your fellow neighbors feel the same way you do ,and go as a group to let them know that its not just you who has a problem with their kid, and maybe they'll listen without getting into an arguement. And after that, if he continues on with the racing by, then a quick call to the PD should change things, and if he doesnt have insurance, and such for it, and they catch him zipping by, most likely they will haul it to impound, or will give him a stern talking to. Id really hate to see anyone get hurt, so I feel that the he'll learn his lesson when he crashes deal is not a good thing. Let your daughter know that you were just lookign out for her safety, and that you love her too much to have anyhting dangerous happen to her.

You did right. Get your kid out of harms way first. She needs to understand darwinism. I would probably mention it to the parents if the problem persists.
