What should i do?
Tried getting the car dyno'ed today. It had massive backfire (partially from a huge hole in my y-pipe) and was running very lean, so lean it was off TTP's charts! Well I was chatting with Matt at TTP and he suggested getting the carb tuned and upgrading the fuel system. Tomorrow Godswill I will be picking up a new y-pipe and catback, and a holly mechanical fuel pump. Im wondering if I should just tune the carb or just buy a new carb all together. If tuning is my best bet any one know of a good place close to east central NJ?
Check the sig for specifics on carb and motor setup as is.

I would get the exhaust fixed and have someone here who knows carbs well play with it for you. That should get you in the ballpark.

saving....easier said than done for some. Plus he's so far away. Im going to his shop tom for the big meet, but theyre not open to do any work. Im really going to keep a promise and pick up my new exhaust from another member, other wise its just too much of a hike for me. Justin did make a good point, any one here know how to tune carbed motors at all?

Just ordered a new fuel pump and flex fan .
Will be picking up Hooker Aero Chamber cat back next sunday.
Hopefully soon a new y-pipe and a used but good Holly 4779 carb. Also whole new fuel line kit from summit for it.
Will need someone who knows their carb's to clean this carb up, install it and tune it for the car.
Any takers?

Whats your specs on that cam? I ran an edelbrock 650 on my 327 with a .488/.510 edelbrock cam and I couldnt get it to make power. Good idea on lookin into that double pumper. I went to (from that edelbrock) a 650 Demon and it picked up LOADS of power, went to a 750 DP holley and it made even more. People told me it would be too much carb, but it was great on that motor. What heads are you running? I see they are cleaned up some, but what valves and cc are they? Good to see you picked up a new pump also check to see how many psi its making when you put it on. Watch with that flex fan we never have had luck with them cooling engines so we ditched them. I went with a good ole clutch fan and the car ran so much cooler. The fins flatten out and dont pull much air.

X3. I have three flex fans just sitting on the shelf. Clutch fans rob less HP, cool better, and there is less of a chance of them breaking up at high RPMs.

I would have ditched the belt-driven fan altogether and gone electric, but that's just me....

Since I am skeptical to run JUST an electric fan I run both I dont wanna trust the cooling of my motor to an electrical part. I would rather have a backup...now if I could just figure out a way to run both a mechanical fuel pump AND an Electric I would feel much better. For now its just an electrical pump.

I heard the flex fans helped with cooling over clutch fans, other wise i would have gotten a clutch type fan. The fuel pump specs say it should flow max at 8 pi, and im planning on putting an electric fan out of a mark VIII, heard from a ton of mustang guys that that fan is a great secret amongst the mustang following. As for the cam, donno exact specs its a mild cam not to lobey but i will be putting a bigger one at a later date, as of right now the heads are stock 350 heads with some porting done nothing crazy. I want the double pumper for now, when im good and ready a set of trick flow heads and a big cam are what im envisioning.

Definitely get the exhaust leak in the y-pipe fixed or replaced before trying to tune any carb. Don't try to fix everything at one time or you could end up chasing a bunch of problems with no real direction.

LOL, if by secret you mean everyone but you knows about the MK8 and Tarus fans, then ok, it is a great secret. Oh yeah, stop taking advice from whomever told you flex fans helped with cooling over clutch fans.
All kidding aside, Jeff is right, fix the known issues first.

What distributor are you using, how is it set up as far as timing curve to full advance. Running lean may not be the only cause for the backfiring. I'd check the timing out before you start dumping time and money into the carb.

Ac delco distributor.
I got the fuel pump in today. Been spending all day trying to get it all hooked up and installed with new lines and fittings. I cant get it to stop leaking from every connection!!
Y pipe and exhaust is coming this weekend hopefully. After that ill have the timing checked and a tune on this carb before i throw the double pumper on it if I decide to.
*Updated* Got the fuel pump to finally stop leaking, its got a fuel pressure gauge on it as well. Its running at max capacity of 8 psi.

Do you still have the computer in the car? Or are you running a non-computer controlled distributor?

haha I sold my old 2101 intake today from a fellow nj thirdgen guy. Him and his buddy came, both have thirdgens and I did tell them about njfboa.org but getting to my point.
I showed them my new intake and my carb and the kid has a good eye. He asked if I had the 1406 carb, im like the 600cfm carb?...no no its a 650 hes like are you sure?
Sure enough Iv been running a 600cfm edelbrock carb(probally the reason why my motor been starving). I sold him the carb (in great condition after now inspecting it) for a uber cheap price of 100 bucks.
Any one have a 750 double pumper? What all would I need to do to make my car run a holly double pumper compare to a edelbrock with an electric choke?

Now, some will disagree (I'm looking at you Chevelle Jon) but in my opinion a 750 double pumper will be too much for your motor, and if it's your daily driver expect to fork over a ton for gas and have some issues in the cold weather...

I donno iv seen alot of guys on thirdgen that have mild 350s with a 750 holley, they may tone down the jets a drop and adjust it but they say they gained lots of power after they installed & tuned it.
