quick exhaust question

Whats the law in New Jersey about where the exhaust needs to be dumped in order to pass inspection? How far back i guess is my question...just past the rear axle or does it have to come clear out the back? I tried to look but didnt find much.

ooo one more while i have you here - cats, is jersey visual inspection?

It has to be behind the last window in the car that can roll down. So in most cars it has to be behind the rear. I Dont remeber the distance it has to be from the last opening window.

NJ is visual inspection, granted I don't know whether they would know whether they were in the right place or not.... but yea, they check your car out with mirrors...

The law says the exhaust must exit at the side or rear of the vehicle no less than 4 inches behind the last window that you can put down.

I think the exhaust has to exit out from under the vehicle as well. Just dumping after the rear axle is probably not legal either. Think about from the point of view that if they need to put the emission's probe in the exhaust then they will look for the pipes to exit. I don't think it's worth the cost to do a true dual exhaust that exits the rear of the car. It's not cheap and you won't really pick up any power over a 3" cat-back. In fact, the 3" cat-back will help pull the exhaust out from each side better.

I heard that only trucks can dump the exhaust at the rear axle, because it is well behind any windows that can roll down. Cars it has to exit out the back. That's what I have been lead to believe...

Cars don't have to exit out the back, just at the perimeter of the vehicle, at least 4" behind the last window you can put down.

a 3" True Duals for an LT1 with 2 high flow cats can max out at 830hp.

Exactly. Certain Ford cars dump out the side from the factory. So do some Vipers IIRC.

I thought about that....not sure how they get around that law. Anyone know (James / Boon) anything more about that?

Or can you just not order an SLR McLaren at a NJ MB dealer?
