tint laws
Still trying to figure out why tint in NJ is illegal. the only thing I can figure is that it is a source of revenue, except for all the law enforcement officers who have dark as hell tint and get away with it.
I love having my windows dark - stops sun glare, head light glare, and allows for some decent action while even in a parking lot. I mean if someone is going to shot a cop I don't think it will matter if windows are tinted or not.

Drivers & Passengers side windows cannot be tinted.
It is what it is, nothing will change it. Just gotta suck it up and deal.

You aren't allowed to tint the windshield or the front side windows. You can tint the hatch as dark as you want as long as you have both side mirrors.

So when a cop pulls you over, he doesn't have to worry that much about you having a gun behind the window. My take on it.

Here we go again!
The statute is 39:3-75, "Safety Glass." The majority of it states that all vehicles made after 1935 MUST have safety glass or "approved safety glazing" for the purpose of safety in accidents. The very last paragraph is what people get pulled over and ticketed for:
"No person shall drive any motor vehicle equipped with safety glazing material which causes undue or unsafe distortion of visibility or equipped with unduly fractured, discolored or deteriorated safety glazing material, and the director may revoke the registration of any such vehicle."
arOck, NOWHERE in the statute does it say the the side windows and rear windows are alright to tint. If it seems too dark, the officer can stop you for it no matter where it is. It basically leaves window tinting to the discretion of the officer. If you've actually seen this in print somewhere, please let me know, I'm genuinely curious as I've heard the same thing throughout my life but never actually seen it.
There is definitely a safety issue for officers when a lot of window tinting is involved, especially at night. But that's not anywhere in the statute either.
39:3-75.1 says that tinting is allowed for medical reasons.

79T/A - I've never seen the "tint the rear sides and back as dark as you want" in a law book, but that's what's listed for NJ in every tint website, and every tint discussion I've ever seen.

and it will get thrown out, every time. from behind the driver seat, you do not need windows. what difference does tint make?
until every cop car pulls the tint off, i will keep it. the whole "safety" aspect for the cop, thats just bitch. admit it. many, MANY other states allow it which have far greater incidents regarding this/similar matters on cop related injuries/deaths. its all about the money and its always been that way.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't arguing, just stating what I have seen.
But I have never once seen a ticket for tint on rear side windows or a back window stand up in court.

Depends of which cop writes you and what the judge decides in court. Basically, it's a big gray area. Many people just pay it because the $54 isn't worth paying hundreds or thousands in lawyer fees to fight it. All I'm saying is that while most of the time cops will ignore the tint if it doesn't cover the windshield and driver/passenger windows, that doesn't mean you won't get a ticket for it.
The only place that really clarifies circumstances where tint is allowed is the medical statute, which states that it can be used with a doctor's note for people with certain medical issues.

Correct. Also included in the statute is that any "safety glass" must be numbered as such. If it comes from the factory, you are okay.
