Same idea, not identical projects though. Firefox was initially created by a teenager that was working on the Netscape project.

I have norton protection when I use IE, as well as log-in identity etc...will the norton carry over to firefox if I d/l it and use that as my main browser?
EDIT: d/l FF and was able to switch over my norton/history/identity etc. now I just uninstall IE?

Since Microsoft created Windows, as well as Internet Explorer, they basically made it where you have to have IE installed on your system... like, Windows Update, Media Player, Messanger, and anything that was created by Microsoft will not use another "browser" other than their own when downloading/installing updates for those programs, reguardless what you set as your default browser.
Ive tried uninstalling IE a very long time ago and failed. So I just left it alone.

ah ok makes sense, so I'll just delete my browsing history and temp files on IE and leave it unused...thanks noah

IE is part of the OS for Windows. You can type web addresses in explorer windows and local paths is IE, opens new windows but it is basically the same thing. Thats how Microsoft got away with selling the OS with the browser. Netscape was pissed about it a long time ago.
