Need opinions on a good weight loss supplement and other things.
I have been working out at a gym for the last 3 weeks and I am looking for a good fat burner/metabolism booster. Does anyone know of any things that really work?
I mean I always see Hyroxycut advertised, any opinions? Should I stay away from shake powder mixes or stay away from the pills? To clarify, I am looking for something to both lose weight and fat. I went to GNC and they really didn't look like they knew what to recommend.
Also, I have an old box of Met-Rx powder shake packets for weight loss and muscle gain that is now around 3 years old. Does that stuff keep? I even have a thing of Whey Protein in one of those bulky containers from 5-6 years ago. Should I just throw it out or might it still be good?
Thanks for the help.

All you're buying with those "weight loss" pills are bunch of ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin ingredients. They just raise your body temperature and make your heart beat faster...tada weight loss. They're useless, just eat normal food and you will be good to go. Or at the very least you can buy them separately, but I still wouldn't.

Soda, Bread, Beer and eating late at night contribuite. Sucks that after a few beers all i want to do is run to wendys. Thats where will power comes in. All those caffiene pills are short term gain, they will f up your heart. The best sucess I had after I stoped playing hockey and I immediatly gained 15lbs was to evaluate what I ate for breakfast, should be whole grain bread and fruit, eat 5 small meals a day rather than 2 big ones. and I did 45min of walking at 3.5mph on about a 5% incline on the tread mill after my work out 3-4 times a week. Two things I liked to eat when training and people think is gross, natural peanut butter, loaded with good fat and protine needed for musle building, cottage cheese is whey protine in its most natural form, if you can stomach the 1% milkfat no sodium added stuff its a great source of natural protine. The only supplemsts I took were amino acids. I substituded many lunches with salads or steamed chicken and broccoli from the chinese place over burger king and wendys. Ground turkey and rice from the supermarket cooked at home is good too. I hated, hated, hated doing cardio but I figured if I just sucked it up and did it for 90 days straight it would pay off. Between th ediet, no drinking and cardio, people arent kidding. I had a 6 pack wich I never had before, I was in better shape at 29 than i was at 19. Of course a few weekends down to the shore and I was back to normal, 90 days of determination all shot in 9 days. My firend is natural body building champ of NJ two years in a row, he keeps me in check.

Yea I would stay away from the weight loss nonsense. Do it the right way and you will feel better about yourself. If you can't do running or biking, try to keep you heart rate up when you lift and do lots of long workouts.

+1 on what alamantia said. ive been on a diet for a while now, and i eat whatever i want, pizza, chips, etc...BUT in moderation. I would eat crap maybe once or twice a week the rest of the week is all good food.
try eating 5 small meals three hours a part, limit yourself to less than 15 grams of fat per meal, and dont eat too many carbs at night, if you do, wait 2-3 hours until they are digested because if you go to sleep without digesting carbs, your body stores it as fat.
heavy sprints also helped me ALOT. doing 20 minutes of heavy sprints is just about the same as jogging moderately for an hour, it gets your heart going faster.
but what it boils down to mostly is your diet...diet is like 70% of it, working out is the 30%. if you want supplements...dpsnutrition.net is a great website, fast shipping, right there in pennsylvania.

Stay away from fat burners. They are a short term solution for a lifetime problem and will only serve to make a mess of your bodies natural balance and digestions.
Just slim down your diet a bit. If you start drinking water instead of caffeinated beverages, cut down on salt, and add good cardio to your lifting routine, you will start seeing weight melt off.

I appreciate all your feedback. I probably should have been clearer though as to where I am currently at. I already have a good diet of protein, and I don't have any bad eating habits. I am even losing weight at a pretty good pace. I've gone from 220 lbs to 205 lbs in a matter of 2 weeks and most who didn't know I've been working out every day after work told me that I looked slimmer. I may even be less than 205 already since I haven't been on the scale in 2 days.
However, I feel it necessary to take it to the next level of losing the gut. I mean I know its only been about 3 weeks straight and I am already feeling tons better, but I just want something like a metabolism boost and something that targets fat. I've got the diet and the workout thing on perfect track already.
Also, what do you guys think about the Met-rx and Whey protein that I bought about 2-4 years ago? Both are powder shake things. The Metrx is in sealed packets, while the Whey is in a screw top jug. You guys think the stuff may still be any good or does that stuff have a bad shelf life?
I would ask GNC, but I want to know that they aren't lying to me about the stuff going bad just so I can buy more stuff from them.

There should be an expiration date on the big jug of whey. All of mine had it. But I'm willing to be if it's 4ish years old its way past due that.

And I would equate the chemicals for losing weight to running.
They both will get your heart going a million miles an hour and burning calories. But the chemicals are dangerous IMO. If you don't wanna run, try biking or swimming. Or even walking. Anything to get your heart rate going.

If you are already losing weight that fast, don't mess with it, if anything be careful. Losing 7+ lbs a week is very fast for someone who is only in the 200lbs range.
Watch your fluids and make sure you are getting enough food calories and not just filling your stomach with supplements.

Running on the treadmills and doing the elipticals are actually how I am losing so much weight. I always do cardio during every workout at some point. I burn on average 600-700 calories every other night according to the machines I use. I just equate losing that much weight so soon to being at the gym almost every day of the week and changing my diet drastically. I usually stay at the gym doing something for 2 hours straight and I feel fine.
I am eating fine. I didn't take any supplements yet. I was just curious if any of you knew of any good ones to take for burning fat. Not that I have a lot to lose, but I want to lose the little I have. Trust me, my heart rate gets going fast on its own when I am on the treadmills or elipticals for 25 min spurts usualy 3 times in a night every other night of the week.
By the way, What do you guys think of those old unused supplements I was mentioning? Still think they are good or should I chuck them?
I appreciate everyone's concern and comments. I am doing fine, I just want something to give me a quicker edge than going all natural.
While I have you guys reading this, does anyone know of any health restaurants that I could go to in the Central NJ area? I used to go to Mindless meals Cafe in Somerset, NJ but they recently closed up. They had the best turkey and bison burger wraps too.

Do you know what happened to the owner as to why he went bankrupt? I mean was it simply because of low sales/customers? I saw a sign on the door that said you could still place orders for food and it listed a cell number, but not where they are located out of. Remember when it used to be Nutra Mart? That place was awesome too. I guess they never could make a go of it. But it is kind of hidden too in the plaza.
Anyway, do you know of any places similiar to mindless meals or any health food restaurants?
I have sealed individual packets of Met-Rx weight loss and lean muscle gain formula that are still sealed and are in powder form for making a shake. They are roughly 3 years old now. Still any good you think?
I also have a jug of Whey Protein in powder form from probably 6 years ago with a screw on top. What do you think?
I mean its powder, so I can't see it going bad in that sense. But I am not sure if all of the nutrients god bad after a while and I am afraid to try either thing in fear that I will get sick.

mindless went out of business if i remember correctly because the main boss was hiring ALOT of his employees and paying them under the table. the IRS audited him because obvious, 2+ stores cant run under 3 people on paper. so it was suspicious. i havent heard of any new health food places in the area, but it was a great idea opening one there. let me know if you find any and ill do the same.
that whey protein should be bad. when i got back into the lifting game about 2 years ago i had whey protein that was a year and a half expired, i took it anyway. it didnt get me sick but im not 100% sure if it still had the 'umph' it had back in the day.
like i mentioned earlier, DPSnutrition.net has the best prices and ships to your door in like 2 days. i have intrapro chocolate by gaspari nutrition and that is the best tasting protein ive ever had, its 23.95 for a bottle that lasts me 2 weeks, i take it once sometimes even twice a day. but for the protein shakes i make that i dont need a good taste to i ordered scivation whey, which is about 57$ for a 10 pound BOX. im working my way through that now.
if you really want to know if u will get sick, make a shake and give it to your girlfriend or something...see what happens haha. but im with you, i cant see powder going bad

The first thing you have to understand is that it doesnt work that way. Your body wants you to be fat, as fat as it can get you. Your working against DNA and nature itself, and there is no way to turn those features off. The best thing you can do for yourself is skip anything that says supplement. A supplement by definition is to replace something that you normally should have. The only thing you should need if your diet is OK is a multivitamin and maybe some protein powder. After you work out, immediatley consume a protein shake and drink something with sugar, but not high fructose corn syrup you want about 40 g of carbs and 15g of protein. The sugar turns your insulin on which force feeds your muscles with all kinds of amino acids, vitamins, and proteins so they can rebuild, and get rid of metabolic waste. 2nd, drink a ton of water. At least a gallon over the course of the day on workout days. And when eating, if its not something that you can grow or dig out of the ground dont eat it. Whole grain breads are ok just look for ones with lots of fiber. cut as much sugar and "white" carbs out of your diet as you can. That means pasta, white bread, pizza crust, etc. But you have to replace them with other "brown" carbs(>2g fiber per 90 cal), they are your gas. Just try those things and see how you feel
