Steroids and Baseball
This is in the news so much again that I wanted to hear everyone's views on the matter.
My personal opinion is that prior to 2005, when MLB caught up to the rest of the sports world, it wasn't cheating. The way I see rules and cheating is simple, if it ain't in the rules it ain't illegal.
I also find it hard to believe that there are people who think this is the first era of sports that people used drugs to try to get ahead. Hell, Grant Fuhr, one of the greatest goalies in hockey history admitted to bumping lines before games to "get up".
How many players have had a drink, a smoke, taken pain killers, and other substances to get themselves ready for a game?
I also don't see how steroids are as big a help to hitters as they are making it sound. Yes, if you are stronger you can hit the ball further, but the vision problems associated with steroid use certainly aren't helping them make any contact.
My biggest complaint about the steroid issue is that this isn't the governments problem!!! Why are my tax dollars being wasted cleaning up a drug problem in a private company?
Enough of my rant. What does everyone else think?

I agree, its part of the sports world... Nothin in this world is pure, why should sports?
Does anyone talk about tiger woods getting laser eye surgery? He now has better than 'perfect' vision, is that cheating?

I can see it being ok at the stage where its not illegal and since everyone else is doing it, you gotta do everything you can to protect your multi-million dollar contract, right? (sarcasm)
But to play devils advocate, steroids don't make you talented, so if you don't have the skills and talent they aren't gonna help you.
Still is interesting as to why the feds are so concerned with how a private industry is doing....
Should be public interest based, if the public gets fed up and starts to not watch, then the industry to should crack down on juicers etc.

You say if it isnt in the rules it not illegal, not sure if your aware but steroids were illegal way before 1995 in the US. Which would make it illegal right off the bat.

None of those drugs improve your ability to play. Smoke and drink hurt your play and painkillers only make it easier to deal w/ the pain of pre existing injuries.

Its not that difficult, no steroids dont help hand eye cordination but it will increase your speed and strenght. If your already a good hitter now you'll be a good hitter w/ a hell of alot more power and speed. Simple as that. I emperimented w/ them in my younger days and I could have lived in the gym and worked out all day when i was on if they would have let me.

I also knew alot of guys on and they never had any "vision" problems, only time I could see that is in years to come after years of steroid abuse.

If its and American business operating in the United States no they arent. It doesnt need to be in any contract. Its a federal law. Why do you think they came down so hard on Vince Mcmahon in the 80's ...steroids.

I think a big misconception that people have about steriods is that their sole purpose is to make you look like Ronnie Coleman. A-Rod may not have taken them to get big, strong, and massive. He may have used them to sustain a level of play that his body would not have been able to otherwise. Hell, John Mcenroe used steroids, and he sure doesn't look like he got extra power from it.
My real bitch is that even if you have a few rogue guys using, regular clean-cut players will have to start to use to stand out/perform equally. And that's a really bad thing.

Tested for what? And don't just say "steriods" or "drugs"...
And what about during training/when they are not fighting?

Tested for everything...including painkillers. Most fighters fight every 3 or 4 months w/ randoms...if they wanna take the chance its up to them.

I agree. There were another 103 names on that list that didn't get leaked (no pun intended). And that's a major issue too. Whoever leaked that information committed a crime as well. Those test results were confidential.
It's obvious here someone had a personal agenda against A-Rod and leaked the information on him and no one else purposely. But that being said, A-Rod still should be held accountable for his actions, as should anyone else on that list.
