In general, if you are looking for something to play the latest and greatest games, you aren't gonna be happy with any laptop under a grand.
The Gateway Fx is on sale at many places (if they still have it), seems Gateway has discontinued them though.

best gaming laptop would be a dell XPS of some sort but even they tend to lack in the gaming area, a good desk top will always kick a lap tops ass and a desk top for under a grand is easy(if you build it yourself) even a 500-600 one will do plus you can always upgrade them later for the newer games and sell off the old components.

more like alienwares are like macs compared to pc's
it legitimately IS good hardware, its just exorbitantly overpriced for what you relatively get.

While that may be what you want, be prepared to spend an extra 500 to 600 dollars on top of a 'nornal' laptop. If your game is that important to you I would go with a dell xps for around 1300, they get great reviews. Otherise, I can recommend some nice dual core laptops with 3 gb of ram for just around 400.
What my real suggestion is however, purchase a 400 dollar laptop that is in all honesty probably perfectly fine for you then take the extra 900 and either build or purchase a killer desktop with a quad core, 6 gb of ram or more and a great graphics card.

When we were shopping for a PC for my girlfriend, who likes to play some games on occasions, we found out that most PC come with ****** on board graphics that won't be enough to satisfy lag free gaming that most people want. So either prepare to shell out some money for something "decent", or build a computer up to your spec that will chew through every game, or anything else for that matter. We ended up buying an average computer and later I swapped out the PSU and a graphics card.
Just as another example. Few years ago a board member here assembled a computer for me. We started with just the basic stuff, because I didn't have much money to spend and wasn't really interested in games. Later when I wanted some performance out of it, I just made some modifications to it, think of it as very expensive legos, later on when you need more you can buy a better part and improve the performance of your machine and be happy with it. As it stands today, the only original parts are; mobo and the hard drive But I have not had any problems playing any game I want.

That CPU and the GTX260 won't be enough to run GTA4 on max setting with a decent frame rate.
If you are serious about building your own desk top drop me a pm and I'll work with you on it i just finished building my first quad core rig and I am extremely happy with how it performs on games.
CoD4 and WaW on max settings FTW
go to www.newegg.com
you will need the following components
Case
Motherboard
CPU
VIdeo card
Ram
Disk Drive
Hard drive
power supply(this is one of the most important parts think of it as a power adder such as nitro a cheap kit will destroy your car)
Those are the basics you can always go into more depth 8gb of ram instead of 4gb and so forth think of it as modding a car lol
and a few tips Intel is the shzinit in cpu's right now but AMD is cheaper and still performs great.
Now days you have the ability to get 2 or 3 of the same video card and link them together in SLI(Nvidia) or Crossfire(Ati) to perform much better over having just one card.
If you go with a intel board and chip you will need a Nvidia video card and if you go with a AMD board/chip ATI cards will be your game. Unless you can find a AMD board with a intel chipset they are out there just hard to find and normally overpriced.
IMO the best bang for the buck in video cards is the 9800GX2 it is a year old now days and is only available in used condition but it is a card that already has SLI built into it making it 2 cards in one, I have 1 of these and it runs CoD awesome.
My rig is as follows for some guidelines
OCZ PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Watt Power Supply
Western Digital Raptor 160GB 10k RPM( I use this as my main drive that has my operating system on it)
Western Digital Caviar 500GB 7200 RPM(second drive for storage all the pirated movies and games and pron are here)
EVGA 9800 GX2 Graphics Card
INtel Quad Core Q8200 CPU
Ocz Reaper HPC pc2-8500 4gb 2x2gb sticks of ram
EVGA 680i SLI Intel 775 Motherboard
Zalman CNPS7700 ALCU Heat sink Cooler
all this is tucked inside a Lian LI V-pc1200 case
When picking a case I recommend leaning towards a full tower it will give you alot of room to work with and make cooling easy always make sure to have enough cooling(more then 1 fan) and for cooling your CPU never use the stock cooler they tend to die after a year or so reference the zalman heatsink cooler above.
as for an operating system vista is getting better and better but vista is being replaced next year with Windows 7, now that kicks asss I have a few copies of the Beta left if you want one. The beta will be good until june next year then you will have to buy the full version.
Again if you have any questions let me know I've been building these for almost 8 years now yes I was a computer geek in school before I got into the car world.
My next step is a kick azz gaming Pc in my trans am HAHAHAHAH or maybe just a Xbox

np any laptop or prebuilt look at what video card and CPU are in them if it has onboard or shared anything with the video card walk away, A video card with 512mb of GDDR3 ram would run most any game at a decent rate on higher settings.
in a day where quad core chips run life don't get a dual core Centrino as most all the newer games are being designed to take advantage of 4 cores and haveing a dual core chip in a game like that will run like crap on most any setting besides lowest, you will want minimal 4gb of ram or the ability to upgrade to more(expansion slots).
The thing about buying a prebuilt is once you open the side of the case to upgrade a component that warranty they give you is gone so make sure you are happy with what you are getting, compared to individual warranties for components you buy to build your own.

Well i'm going to upgrade it in time so the warranty does not matter to me. And i just got of the phone with Bestbuy i can do monthly payments and that pretty much what i'm looking for.

cool be careful with best buy they get those low prices as I said above hiding those dual core chips and sharing the video card memory with the machine itself.
I'd never buy a PC from them I wish Comp USA had not of gone out of buisness.
If your not in a rush look into Newegg they have financing options or you can get there credit card or use paypal. They sell laptops and best part they ahve actual customer ratings attached to them not some BS made up by a add company.

Just don't waste your money on something that will get outdated by the time you pay it off. What I'm really saying, don't go for the tiny monthly payments. Of course, that's just my opinion.
