s10 question

hey guys. im looking into the 2wd s10s for a dd.(probably an automatic) im just looking to get some opinions on how these things do in the rain and snow. i never drove one of these before but i know a couple ppl with them and they say they get good mpg. im probably going to lean more towards the box style(93 and under) unless i can find a nice deal on a 94 or newer.

i only ask about the snow because i have a half hour drive to work and i would hate to not be able to get out of the driveway with it lol. but i was able to make in to work in the z in that storm last winter so i guess it cant be as bad as that thing was lol.

i drove my friends '97 s10 4cyl manual 2wd in the POURING rain and i had no problems, hell it had more traction than my acura, i plan on getting one as well but something around a '97

And i'd say go for a manual, the 4 cyl have no balls so its a little easier to deal with when you have a manual IMO

u can find the new style very cheap... while i love and used to have a boxy style one... 82-94... they are real hard to find not rusted and trashed.

Why no 4wd?... Columbus, from what ive driven thru, doesnt have the best snow removal department sans 206

I've had 2 S-10 (GMC Sonomas - ZR2) and even with the larger tires they were really poor in the snow in 2 wheel drive. There is little weight over the rear wheels so it's easy to spin them up. But then again it was also fun to do some drifting in the rain.

If you do go with a 2wd you'll have to put weight in the bed for snow. Block, sandbags, whatever. It'll do good though. The 4 cylinder is awesome with gas, and one of the most reliable engines GM has built. The 4.3 is pretty good also, look for the valve guide seal puff on startup. In my opinion, the TBI 4.3 is very reliable. The CPI 4.3 makes a bit more power but has slight issues with the fuel injector spider, fuel pressure regulator, and just in general the entire fuel system. You'd probably be cramped in a regular cab, so an extended cab would probably be best. You might want to consider a ranger also...they are just as reliable as the s10s, they are very similar.

my dad has a zr2 s-10... its a lot of fun in the snow with 2wd... 4wd it goes through anything. never got it stuck yet, hell it handles better than my jeep. Before that my dad had a 89 s-15 (gmc) and that was awesome in the snow before we got rid of that it there was about 180k on the clock.

mom has a 98 jimmy with the 4.3 with 170k and still ticking. runs like brand new. and that is a tank in the snow with 4wd as well.

I have also owned a 94 ranger stx 5spd, 2wd sucked in the snow/rain. 4wd was really good tho but since it was a manual it was easy to over accelerate and start sliding. (might have been because i was 17 at the time and just wanted to have fun lol)
