Thermometer?
Did any Fbody models come with rear view mirror that displays the outside temperature? How about any sort of display that shows instant MPG, Trip, Temps, Compass, etc?
Or any GM product from the 4th gen years that might be adapted to the fbody?
This little bit of luxury tech is something I miss having in the Firebird and would like to add, especially if it can be done so it looks OEM.

no, a maplight and auto dimming in the GTA's was the extent of the rear view mirrors. They never had information cluster.

Look at some caddys and Buicks around the same year they probably have it. Your also going to need the temp sensor and harness for it to work, as well at the compass. Highly doubt your going to be able to retrofit instant mpg.

I checked the aftermarket offerings on rear view mirrors and found that there is a very OEM looking mirror with lights, temp and compass. Darn thing is about $200.
So my second plan was to look at the other GM lineup to see what is available that might be adaptable. But I don't know what is involved with wiring to make it work. Maybe I'll find something on Service Info.

A factory unit is going to cost you just as much if not more if your buying new, now junkyard price I dont know that they would charge ya, you need the thermister from in front of the rad, harness, harness from headliner to mirror, and compass module.

yeah, parts would come from a salvage yard.
This is probably one of those things that are not worth the effort.

go to a junkyard people dont know what theyre talking about. this is a common swap for beretta and cavalier people. there is no compass module its built into the mirror. most of these mirrors are plug and play power/ground
edit: the temp sensor you will need to get though

Wow, thanks for that info. Been searching for a beretta or cavalier forum where they talk about the rear view mirror, but so far, no luck.
Can you point me to a forum where you think I can find this mirror swap info?

hope that helps. pink = hot, black = ground, green is supposed to stop the mirror from dimming in reverse (everyone just leaves this wire taped up). the temp sensor is a basic two wire system and should be mounted somewhere that it will get a realistic reading (like not in front of anything really hot )

Oh, boy! I spent some time reading on that forum. Then looked at Service Info. Turns out the only piece needed besides the mirror is the outside temperature sender. And that is located right in front of the radiator on the Suburbans that have that rear view.
Shouldn't be to hard to get one from the salvage. But the mirrors don't have lights, so a ceiling mounted light set from like a Monte Carlo or similar is needed to replace the lighting function.
Not a high priority item on my list of mods, but its nice to know its not difficult to do.
Thanks again for the link and your input.

no harness is needed. theres only two wires for the temp sender. im sure anyone on this site is capable of running two wires then hooking up a power and ground for the mirror.
as for the harness from the headliner to mirror and compass module......WTF

didnt know the compass module was built in, everything Ive worked on has had a module for the compass. I meant wires but said harness, same basic thing.

The 98 Town Car has a compass "bulb" in front of the mirror, not exactly built in, but it is still part of the mirror assembly. I don't have any info on the Ford wiring, so I can't say how they are designed/connected.
I'll look at the Caddy wire diagrams on Service Info and see what I can find there. I would hate to give up the map lights.
