I am no expert but it looks like it is to me. When I've been on autotrader.com looking for a car, they have pics of some cars for sale that were totaled and some didn't look as bad as that. I would think if the frame of the car is damaged or bent, they probably would say its totaled. When my mom had her Subaru totaled by a guy that ran a light years ago, the engine still worked and the car could move on its own, but they still totaled it. Glad your friend is okay.

assuming the frame isnt bent it looks like it will need a hood, front bumper, fog lights if they were there, grill, fender well splash guards, valance splash guard, trans/oil cooler, radiator, and anything that is behind the front subframe, which im not familiar with hondas that much so it could be washer bottle, hood latch etc etc.

could be a bit pricey to repair.

my 88 camaro was totaled with less damage than that.

I'd assume there's definitely frame damage too, my girlfriends mint condition cougar was totaled with "frame damage" when all that was visible from the outside was the bumper cover being all waked out after being rear ended.

if the airbgas went off then its a good possibility they will total it. i seen alot of cars with very minimal damage but were totaled out cause of the airbags being blown.

you may have less damage, but it has a lot lower value than the civic does, so it doesnt take as much to total it, i think if the repair is 75% or more than the value of the car, they total it, or atleast thats what they told me when my car was totaled

depends also what insurance company she has... they all total at different % of the value of the car.... how many miles on the car plays in also... if the air bags didnt go it probably wont total... but if they did it probably will... if those frame rails are kinked and the bags went off then it definitely will... its hard to tell though in just one picture like that... but if the frame is kinked and the bags went off the motor will ahve to come out and thats just alot of labor added.... let us know what happens...

Those rails will need some work, the reinforcement bar is bolted to the rail ends. The radiator support is toast, the air bags aren't cheap for that car.

Like the one response said, the motor may have to come out but I doubt the rails are kinked too far up, if anything the ends are probably shot but they're serviceable, you can just replace them.

As also stated it will depend on the insurance company, every company has different thresholds.

IMO the car is toast...and if not it's VERY close.

I miss my old job

if cost of repair is 2/3 value of car, most insurance companies will total it.
im pretty sure thats the number.
so if book is 10k, if cost to fix is 6k or more, its done. depending on the shop it goes to could be close.

Even if it isn't totaled, it will never be the same.

if its repaired correctly it would be... actually better becuase if its got 100k+ it would have a new condenser radiator new crystal clear headlamps... only problem is that insurance companies dont all use OEM parts so aftermarket stuff sucks... sometimes it doesnt fit right but at that point we force the insurance company to get OEM...

do they quote it lower when using aftermarket? cause if thats teh case it may be better in somecases in order for the car not to be totalked.. i should have made this a poll.. but yeah the air bags did come out.. and shes pretty upset i told her more than likely it is but you never know..

ill let you guys know when she finds out

thanks for everyones replies
