Off roading in south jersey
A few friends and I want to go take an offroading adventure somewhere in south jersey. We all have stock trucks (my silverado, an xterra, and a toyota fj cruiser). Anybody know a good trail that these vehicles will be able to handle, but is not boring that is close by Marlton?

There is Wharton State Forest, which is on the other side of Atco, just off of 206. Colliers Mills is just on the other side of Fort Dix at the intersection of E. Colliers Mill Road and Hawkin Road. Stay on the trails in both places. Wharton has more challenging terrain, but there are paths around all of the stuff that would give you trouble. Colliers Mills doesn't have anything really challenging, but it's still a good time and very scenic.
Here's a map from Marlton to the Atsion Ranger Station @ Wharton: http://tinyurl.com/342pcp5
Not sure what might be closer to you in Marlton, never been off roading anywhere over there.

Do not go down the powerlines at colliers mills in a stock truck. I out water in the cab of my 87 Chevy on 36 TSLs in the black mud hole. I was double locked and still got stuck.

Mike, me and my jeep crew go out in tabernacle to carrenza memorial. It's just off 206, very stock vehicle passable. My buddy took his girls bone stock yj and I seen a stock gmc Jimmy (s10 style) make it through the puddles. Just stay to the edge of them.

Aren't the powerline trails off limits anyway? I seem to remember seeing no trespassing signs there last time I was back there.

They may be off limits to enter from the fire roads its self but to enter from stump tavern is completely legal. I know because some friends got caught out there at like 12am one night and the rangers told them its dawn to dusk rules and they are considered legal hunting, hiking, and horseback riding trails.

Ahh, I've never gone in from Stump Tavern, only from Hawkins Road behind New Egypt Speedway. I stick mostly to the trails by Collier's Lake and between Dix and Lakehurst.

Apple Pie Hill was eh. It is a fire tower with a locked door at the top. Much cooler place is Quarter Mile/Carrenza. Nicer place to chill out.

There are hundreds of trails in Wharton that a stock truck can handle. Off Atsion Road is Goshen Pond Campground (Shamong) and there are some nice trails back there. All passable in stock form. Apple Pie hill is cool as well. You can find some nice trails off of Chatsworth Rd in Tabernacle as well. Anywhere in that general area you will not be disappointed

The trails mostly are do-able in Wharton as long as you know what you're doing. Making sure mud holes / water holes don't have ruts in the bottom from some jerk with 44" boggers who wanted to be funny. Making sure that you have a second vehicle with you (its almost ALWAYS a good idea to have a second at all times with you) if you want to try something you think you may get stuck on. I cant tell you how many times we have pulled out the person going solo. Wharton can turn you around quickly....its happened to almost all of us that I know who have gone back there.
Hell, my Ram got swallowed by ground that seemed solid, but was not. There was about 7" of hard ground and probably 35+" of muck underneath of it. I went to pull a u-turn and the ground just collapsed and I was sunk, no getting out.

Dude, I know a metric SH** TON of trails. I have been almost everywhere! Apple Pie Hill, Quarter Mile, all of Carranza, Hidden Lakes, pole lines, power lines, and almost all the camp ground areas. You name it, I've probably been there. If I didn't trade my truck for the GTO I could lead the way. If you ever want to take my buddy (knows some trails that I don't) and I along we can show you some sweet trails and what to go through and what to stay away from. You can PM me if you want.

You'll have to come out with us sometime - there's always an extra seat somewhere.

Only wheeled Wharton a few times, but very true. Lots of water crossings and some deep, thick mud. Make sure that all of your stock trucks have good solid tow points front and rear, and each of you should bring a tow strap (No metal hooks). Part of wheelin' is getting stuck. It's more fun (And less expensive) if you're prepared to get yourself unstuck.

Very true.
Side note - do you hang out with the High Point Mudslingers club? I heard on JeepForum that there is a guy trying to open an offroad park on his land in Wantage and I figured those guys would have a hand in it.

No, although I do see a lot of their rigs all the time. The folks I've met in that club are pretty cool, but I'm already a member of another club that I'm heavily involved in, so not thinking of joining another. I'd love to see an off road park in my own backyard, though and would definitely support the effort!
I am actually a member of the North Jersey Jeep Club ( www.northjerseyjeepclub.org). We promote legal wheeling in a family-friendly atmosphere, and do monthly runs to wheel (Mainly Rausch Creek in Joliet, PA). Only requirements are that you be 18 and own a Jeep to join the club, but anyone can join the forum. (Please excuse the shameless plug).
