Toyota Pick-Up truck owners here!

Just wanted to see how many folks here own or have owned newer Toyota pick up trucks and what were your experiences? I hear nothing but good things about them, and am about to pull the trigger on a used 2006 as soon I return to California! Are they easy to work on, parts inexpensive, any other fun facts?

The crazy part is I know exactly what weekend that photo was taken... sadly 3 of the 4 vehicles in that photo are rotting away in a junk yard.

I'm looking to get a 2006 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner, V6, 6-speed, 2WD. Mostly to haul the motorcycles, no crazy towing, racing, just regular daily driving in Southern California.

My brother has an 08 Crew cab tacoma, the thing is awesome, only thing that hes gone thru is brakes and clutches, but he beats on the thing (towing, wheeling, being an *******), and with the 33's and locking diff its plenty capable off road

X-runners are real nice....toyota's answer to the chevy xtreme. I worked for toyota during college up until 2001. Issues w/frames happened in the earlier models and toyota did warranty them up to and including replacement of frame..didn't hear too much on the latter ones for frame issues so i assume the construction and issue was tended to and remedied. As for the 4.0l, they weren't included in the famed 'sludge monster' series of the past, which empassed the 1MZ/5s models. They were a newer motor built after the sludge debacle came about. I think these were more prominent on the 3.4 and possibly the 3.0's, although the biggest complaint of the 3.0 was headgaskets. The new 4.0 or xgr series has been out for the past 5-6 years and there hasn't been too many issues to my knowledge, although i'm outta the import/toyota game. It has been in a few models including being the base powerplant in the tundra and in the fj cruiser which responded well to boosted applications, so i assume parts aren't too expensive being it was used widely by yota. I think its safe to say its a pretty durable go box.

1 thing you should consider is the relative value compared to say a tundra though. Seems smaller trucks, when equipped w/higher options, tend to encroach on the price points of full size trucks, so dollar for dollar a tundra may be a better deal. Even though i have the redneck mentality that loves American made pickups, i gotta admit toyota makes an awesome full size truck.

Tundra is considered full size. Is it a 3500 series...no. But payload and towing capacity puts it in the full size spectrum. Even the new taco's are the size of the dakotas, which were considered medium size 15 years ago. When it comes to trucks, it appears bigger is what the consumers want.

Tacoma would be classified as direct competitors to these smaller light duty trucks

Tundra is more of a 1500/f150/dodge 1500 series truck...can tow 10.4k, has a 5.7 v8, etc, etc.

Ridgeline is not a truck. It's a modified pilot....which is a modified mini van

If we're basing how good a vehicle is by the amt of recalls the company had that makes it we wouldnt be driving anything. The recall i see that the tundra had was w/the slip yokes on 2011 and a power window switch over several toyota vehicles but this thread started w/how good the xrunner is....which is a pretty good pickup/motor.

Toyota is the only company that threaded into the 1 area others dont go...the big truck market. Big truck buyers are brand loyalists and ones that depend on their vehicle for their livelihood. Hauling 20k trailers/landscaping companies/plow and tow companies etc etc... Cummins, duramax, Powerstroke....a foreign manufacturer has an uphill battle competiting w/these but the majority of big truck sales are the 1500 series vehicles and toyota did a good job designing their vehicle to be a valid consideration for the average weekend warrior like myself...needs the capability to tow every once in awhile, haul household debris etc. Don't get me wrong, i'd go chevy silverado if i was to buy a new one myself but i give credit where credit is due. I just see the whole xover market and a faux pickup like the ridgeline and i kinda find it funny as a truck-ish vehicle..kind of like the ssr or lincoln blackwood...truck-ish look but not function. To me, a ridgeline is a pickup one buys to pickup mulch that is already bagged or needs something to transport their oversized cappucino machine.

The pre 2005 Tacomas can have frame problems so if you get something older, check the frame closely. Not all of them rot out but you need to check closely. The 3.0 and probably the 3.4 as well need routine maintenance that can be a real pita depending on what it is (PCV valve, timing belt, water pump). The exhaust manifolds on the 3.0 can cause burnt exhaust valves on the driver's side due to the way it wraps around and meets up. I don't know much about the newer 2005 and up so I can't really comment on them.
