Totally different cars and target market. Very few people will cross shop the SS and the STi. Fast sport compacts are not cheap so it doesnt matter what high school kids want. Not to mention insurance rates will not fit well with the same demographic.

And this is the downfall of our country. When the hell did the notion of earning your own go?

lol in what world do you live in that a STI gets the same mileage as a LS3? subaru's high performance motors get the crappiest mileage ive seen out of a 4 banger on this side of the 2000's.

also what world do you live in where high school kids drive brand new 40,000 dollar cars?

not anymore. grew up in a pretty crappy neighborhood, but no the area i live in now is just normal middle class people who dont usually spend their entire years salary on a car for themselves, let alone for their children. If you live in an area where none of these are true and high school kids are driving around in 40,000 dollar cars then you must realize that isnt a very realistic portrayal of an average american neighborhood

(40-50k is the average yearly wages for an american household)

Not too average, but it does happen, and tbh if a company were to market a new car to the youth group, this is the target market, not the market where kids are in used cars.

Someone said the g8 GXP got 22 highway which is what the STI gets. I know the cars are extremely different it was just an example of a similar car priced similarly. Lets be honest middle class families buy their children newer cars(about 3 years old). Sure they are buying used but think about how big of an emotional attachment you had to your first car. If GM had a car that young people wanted as their first cars it could create loyalty and many future purchases.

Sure young people want the Camaro but even in its lower v6 trims its non sensible for a parent to give that to a kid on his/her 17th birthday.

So we got off topic. I'm still mad at GM for this flop.

Edit by similar car I mean 4 door performance.

lol what world are you living in man. average american middle class family the first car is usually bought by the kid, with their own money, they saved, from their job, that they worked. what world do parents just give 3 year old cars to kids with no driving experience. usually its a 1500 dollar toyota or a honda.

for the record i never had an emotional attachment to a car. there have been a few i regretted selling, but nothing to get teary eyed over...but thats probably just because i buy cars with the intentions of selling them after a few months for more money.

It's mixed. I know in my high school, and most/every surrounding town, the new/newer cars outnumbered the "beaters" by a large, large, large majority. The beauty of monthly payments/leases/what-have-you.

I wouldn't purchase a SS right now, as I do ~3,000 miles a month between home/work/girlfriend, so I'm riding my old 4-cylinder econobox for everything it's got, and taking advantage of the MPG savings. However, I do love the G8, and am encouraging my brother to purchase one in a few years. But, that's because I've seen the car in person & like it. I've yet to see the SS in person, but if it delivers, then that makes the decision a lot harder.

If my commute was shorter and easier on the pocket, then a 4-door GM vehicle that offers a balance of comfort, performance and class would definitely in the running.

When was the last time you stepped into a high school or college parking lot? I must be living in a fantasy world when I go to class every day or when I did community service and observations in schools last year. Do you want me to take pictures of the parking lots at school?

That wasn't about the SS, it was for this off-topic part about making a car kids want.

And just cause someone drives something doesn't mean they own it. I'm not doubting some kids being well off but face value isn't always the truth.

#1 spot in 2011... that town attends Kaseys High school and borders my town.

I totally agree it is NOT realistic to compare to "average" anything, only that this is what we saw when in HS and even now.

Can't find the article I read earlier, but supposedly it has now been confirmed that the new SS will have an optional manual trans and magnetic ride control.
