Wait...you can get your permit without going to a driving school?
I remember that we had drivers ed in HS, then we passed the test. You took your testing stuff and you called the driving school. I drove 6 hrs in a little sunfire for about a week and a half, and then I had my little paperwork signed authorizing my permit. That was like 3 weeks after my bday, so I waited a whoooooooole year before I could drive on my own.

It used to be that if you got your permit before you turned 17 you had to take 6hrs behind the wheel and you had to wait 6 months to get your license. Once you turned 17 you could just get your permit by passing the written test, and then you could get your license as soon as you wanted.

I got my permit after I turned 17, took the 6 hours of behind the wheel anyway (for the ins. discount), and got my license exactly 3 weeks after I got my permit.
