Permit/liscence question

Do you have to have your permit for a full year before receiving your liscence? Or If say you take drivers ed 3 months after your 16th birthday, then get your permit, and then you turn 17 can you get it? or does it have to be one year from ur permit?

(based on when i got mine)
you need your permit for at least 3 months before you can get your license. I only had my permit for like 3.5 months before i turned 17. I dont know how it works now with the GDL requirmemnts, but id assume the permit parts are the same.

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/cit_permi...er_permit.html

it gets confusing. but from what i read, it seems you need your permit for 6 months if you get your permit at the age of 16, then at 17 you go for the GDL permit, which just limits when you can drive, how many passengers, etc. then 6 months after you turn 17 you can go for the full license. If you ahve any questions find a phone number and call, opr call a drive school, or even just go to a local MVC and ask.

From how it was when I got mine, if you want your permit when your 16, you have to go to a driving school, and you get your restricted liscense at 17, then the full liscense when ur 18 (or 1 year after you had the restrcted type) ... but i didnt bother with the school thing cuz once u turn 17, all you have to do is pass the permit written test and wait 6 months after. I didnt get my liscence until i was 17 1/2 . Im sure its changed since then.

i'm 19 now, and when i got mine, it was the first year with the new laws and stuff. for me, you needed the permit for 6 months before you could take the test and get your license at 17. then another year before you could get the full license.

driver's ed was a class in school, and driving school was seperate from school, and thats when you tool the road driving lessons.

Anyway, if you take driving school (6 hours of on-the-road time) you can get your provisional license after 6 months of having your permit, but the catch is, you must be at least 17 to have your provisional. So when you take your permit test, you want to be 16 and half, otherwise, you will be waiting a year.

However if you dont go to driving school, then you must have had your permit for a year before getting your liscense.

For instance, I got my permit when I was 16 and a half. I didn't go to driving school, so i waited a year before getting my license (so by that time it was 6 months after my 17th birthday). It wasn't until after i got my license that my dad found out that you can get a discount on car insurance if you go to driving school, so i actually went after i already had my license. But had I gone while i still had my permit, i could have gotten my license on my birthday, instead of 6 months later.

In short: Must be at least 17 to be elligible for our first license no matter what.
6 months after permit if you have taken 6 hours of on-road time with driving school, (as well as taken drivers ed in school which is a school requirement anyway)
One year after permit without on-road Driving School.
