I basically gave up when they decided to regular air intake boxes some years ago. Smokey Yunick must be laughing in his grave. They killed that sport – turned it into IROC. And those cars, geez, nothing but chopped & channeled 67 Chevy pickups. I appreciate what they have done with such old school tech, but geez.
Not only did they kill the cars, now they are killing off all the tracks with personality. BFD, another super-speedway, yippee. Meanwhile, the Darlington’s of the world disappear. They have taken the IROC concept to the tracks as well. Ugh.
And remember, they did this all in the name of ‘competition, fairness + cost containment’. Which is BS. Multicar teams fly in the face of that logic. How can a one car team go against 8 Roush cars – with 8 times the R&D and test time and reduced costs via economies of scale? Cost containment? But different engines on the super-speedways? Ugh. Sure, that helps.
And don’t get me going how a driver can drive one car and own another car he is racing against. That is a big conflict of interest in my book. I watched the end of a Busch race last year, and one of the TV guys, DW IIRC, made the point that a driver (IIRC, Harvick) might have backed off in order to let the car he owned win. How can that not bother anyone? NASCAR allows all of this because they want more cars and more sponsors for when they break into 2 divisions in the next few years. That is why they came up with this chase nonsense. They are setting the fans up for ‘playoffs’. At least the ones that can afford the $125+ ticket prices.
I liked the days of Dale Earnhardt, Harry Gant & Bobby Allison. And Pontiacs & Oldsmobiles. I bet the days before that (before my time) were even better. I like Stewart because he has proven he can drive – isn’t he a former IRL champ? I never liked Gordon until his ex-wife tried to take his $$; now I like him more. I’ll root a bit for little E because his old man ruled all things.
NASCAR live is like redneck water torture, and I’ve been to enough races (Dover, Pocono, Daytona, Indianapolis) to have an opinion. At least Dover was interesting when it was pavement – no more. I could never sit + watch local racing either (I lived 5 minutes from Wall Stadium). Green flag, gear up, yellow flag, gear down, green, gear up, yellow, gear down, repeat. Ugh. I think it is like how some people feel about baseball; if you aren’t playing it’s no fun.
F1 was cool because it was the breeding ground for new tech – ABD, traction control, active suspensions – all out of F1. But I get the sense that series is not what it once was. But in all honestly, I stopped following it when I moved and lost speed vision. (I just got it back – maybe I should call it NASCARvision).

While understandable, I think that is a shortsighted view. There is a new race every few minutes. They tear the car down & rebuild it and race again in such a short time, and then have to run within a 1/10 of a second for their last run. No margin for error. Plus, you have to watch those guys drive Top Fuel & Funny Cars. They drive the **** out of those cars; watch the throttle blades. I wish I had more time to follow + learn more about drag racing. Definitely the best type of racing I’ve seen in person, bar none.
Bring back Trans Am & GTP racing!!
Wayfast, all race car drivers deal with the elements. Get over that. Half those punks don’t even know what heel-to-toe shifting is.
I would jump in a cup car w/o fear – you couldn’t get me in a TF, FC or open wheel car if you paid me.

shortsighted? yes perhaps. However i feel that a "sport" needs some kinda "hook" to attract a person to watching it. I know a great deal goes into building and engeering all those big engines and im not taking anything away from them. I'll be the first one to tell you that i wouldnt be able to make one of those. However when you look at the events themselves they lack entertainment value, in my opinion. What do top fuel dragster run in 1/4 mile? 3.5-4 secs? ( i really have no idea ) Ok here im sitting eating my pop tart and all of a sudden i get an urge to fart and look away for a split second. Thats it the competition is over, all the hype is done and now we get a whole new race. Its like having sex for the first time, it just doesnt last long enough to get exciting, or maybe its just me, i dunno.
Now when i look at WRC i see some motherf'ing kick ass driving from those guys, minute after minute thru sand, snow, gravel or anything you throw their way, they go thru turns like a hot knife goes thru butter and if they crash and it aint that bad they just continue. I've seen the cars flip over and they were turned back by spectators and the race was continued, ive seen teams push their cars accross the finish line with their bare hands when the car couldnt make it to the end of the stage, everything you can think has been done - no wheels/tires no problem. They will keep on going no matter what. I guess i like actually SEEING the dedication that they have towards what they do and thats what attracts me. Im not saying top fuel dragter teams arent dedicated but i CAN NOT see it.
As far as F1 goes, ive been watching it since Schumi was in Benetton and i dont even remember when that was, mid 90's i guess. And what attracts me to it is pure speed and talent that it takes to handle those machines. Sure its not as great as it once was but ill still watch it pretty much over anything else. Second most viewed sport in the world two <--- not that it matters or anything.
F1 & WRC FTMFW!

Any automotive sport where the car's no longer have any real basis to the street vehicles, I lose interest.
I like ALMS, Speed GT SCCA racing, things of that nature. NASCAR and NHRA, they are bad ass cars, but not as cool as production based cars.

NASCAR sucks ballz deep and hard.
the cars are junk, 99% of the drivers aren't really that good, and most of the tracks are the same anymore.
