Atco results from tonight

Well...taking Jon's instructions in wanting at least some sort of baseline...i ran before he got there. I got smoked by a 35th anniversary stang. As it sits right now, my 305/auto/2.73 combo was faster then my new 350/auto/3.42 combo by 6 tenths in the 1/4.

94 degree day...a billion % humidity.

My 60' was a 2.2 and it was all downhill from there. My TV cable was oddly adjusted (I thought it was right) so even though i shifted, the trans would decide to shift at 6000. . TPI+6000 is no good. I ended up spinning what seemed a quarter of the way...only to not be able to really hit 3rd gear by the end...for an 86 mph trap and a 15.581 run.

Then Jon (Fasterthanyou) got there. Unfortuneately, so did rain/thunder storms. Him and I discussed some tuning stuff...went over a lot...and once the rain let up began playing. We got everything straightened out...and as i finally drove into the staging lanes...they decide to close the track.

Well, we met at a Wawa closeby, and he began tuning some more. As it sits, the car is completely different. It runs like a bat out of hell and I'm very pleased right now. It no longer runs rich, or hot. The fans run now (they didnt before) and idle is awesome. Not only that, after a TV cable adjustment its shifting better. However, the governor in the trans is set a tad high...I'll talk to Ziggy about that.

All and all...im pleased with how the night turned out.

Defenitly when you get a chance, go back to the track and practice like crazy.

In my old T/A with the 350 BS in it, it went 16 something, and I just kept going back to the track more & more, and brought it as low as 14.9 I could have done better but time & money constraints where working against it.

His governer is way too high for that engine. It's no 383 long stroker but a 350 with a 6000rpm shift poing is far from optimal. Not to mention I had the rev limiter set at 6100 from GM's 10000rpm stock setting .
I think with some hook, 1 more track visit with about 3-4 runs, and short shifting the 1-2 to prevent tire smoke it'll be a mid to low 13 sec car.
The humidity was so high that on the drive there huge rain drops the size of golf balls were coming from the sky! It was hot, muggy, and not a good night for racing.
I can't wait to go back. Anybody up for Atco next week?

I think we put a corvette governor in your tranny. That's not unusual for a high performance application. We can get you straightened out pretty easily. I'll try to find a stock governor (more weight) and see if that helps you.

Okay, if you guys are going to Fudd's I'll plan to do the same.
badz, the governer is definatly high. It would be nice if he had a stock shifter or some sticky slicks but he has neither right now. When he upshifts with his aweseme shifter it just doesn't shift until it wants too. Kind of annoying to have the shifter that takes 2 hands to put it into park do nothing for you when shifting through the gears .
How hard is it to replace or modify the governor? Is it just in the tailshaft housing with the vss gears?

There's a round cover on the drivers side right in front of where the tailshaft bolts on. Just use a screwdriver or scraper and a hammer and knock it off ( gently). The governor just pulls right out. You need a heavier one. Even when manually shifting, the governor pressure tries to "fight" the full line pressure. Most people want later upshifts, but being your car is TPI, I guess you might want to try a governor from a 91 caprice or pick-up truck.

I think he'd be good with around 5000-5400rpm upshifts. That'll let him actually USE his awesome shifter and save the transmission a little bit of life when merging on the highway... no need to be passing people on the highway with 6000rpm upshifts. His car can boogie past 98% of the cars upshifting at 4000rpm 8) . I just think he'll have more fun shifting it himself.

Nothing wrong with trying it.
