230 Years of Killing
Happy Birthday Marines!
We've cursed and killed, fought and ****ed in every corner of the world.
Since 1775, delivering the pain and protecting whats ours.
"It's Osama bin Ladens job to make peace with god. It's our job to arrange the meeting."
Gen. Jones, Commandant of the Marine Corps
"Those that live by the sword will be shot by those that don't."
Marine infantry captain in Afghanistan
"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank GOD for the United States Marine Corps." - Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945
"Some People Spend An Entire Lifetime Wondering If They Made A Difference. Marines Don't Have That Problem." Ronald Reagan
"It's another Iraqi town, nameless to the Marines racing down the main drag in Humvees, blowing it to pieces."
Opening line to the book Generation KIll, by Evan Wright
"The Marines were started in a bar, Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, by a gang of drunks with long rifles and big balls."
Line from Jarhead by Anthony Swofford
Since you just read this in English and not Japanese or German, thank the United States Marine Corps.

my cousin was a marine, lucky for the family it was during times of peace for america. i have never been and will never be a soldier for medical reasons, but i do truely appreciate those who hold freedom in such high regard that they would lay down their life to protect it.
happy birthday and god bless the marines and every other american soldieer around the world.
later

here's to 230 more, jarheads.
btw, small trivia bit: does anyone know where the term jarhead comes from? it's the uniform. the collar makes the marine's head look like you could just screw it off, like the top of a jar.

the term jarhead is from the high and tight hair cuts most marines wear, when viewed from the back the hair looks like the lid and the head looks like an empty jar. and from association our heads are also "an empty jar" ie. dumb! also the term leatherneck refers to the high leather collars marines wore way back in the day to protect their necks from sword slashes. the high collar of our dress blues is an homage to this old uniform function and the name leatherneck refers to this. we have about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 traditions in the marines and everything has a story although most are based off of accepted tradition and not historical fact!
