JR, did he actaully reformat the hard drive? Any more information about what he did would be a big help.

I have some software that you may be able to use to recover any lost data.

When you would restart your computer you can press f-1 (setup) or f-10 (restore) he said that Restore the system came up and pressed ok or restore it took about 20mins. to complete and he thought that's what you pressed, i don't think he reformated it, it just takes it back to the factory settings from Compac, so to me i don't think he deleted anything, but i'm not the greatest with a computer, thanks for getting back. Hmm...I'll have to look into Compaq's restore system to see how it works. I haven't used their restore function before.

I'll get back to you later today.....

That's a pre-built system from Compaq. Some pre-built PC dealers have restore functions like that built into the system, while others force you to use a restore CD which will reformat the hard drive and then reinstall the OS so that the computer is basically in the same condition that it was in when you purchased it.

Haven't used it in a few years, but Norton utilities use to have some good software for restoring / unerasing files and such.

What operating system?

yea like justin said, on my toshiba laptop they gave me a DVD that contains an image of XP home. you just pop it in and it restores everything, i dont like it. i dont know if dell has their stuff stored on a separate partition or what, i know they have a "tools" partition but i dont know what it contains. if you over wrote the data then it would be very hard, if not impossible to get the stuff back. kinda hard to say what to do w/o lookin at it...

Dell sends a windows installation CD that already has all of their tools built into it with every machine they ship.

Still not sure what the deal with Compaqs are though.....

Thanks for all the help, but some told me that when you save things in the Favorites it will get wiped right out, along with pictures, but not downloads of videos. Thanks Again. JR1.

Any links that you had saved in your favorites prolly did get wiped out, but it's hard to say for sure what happened to everything else without knowing exactly what your Dad did....

it should wipe everything out, since most restore programs do a hard format and then reinstall. why aren't you using AVG free? one of the best anti-virus programs out there, and like the title alludes, it's free to use it.
