can't beat the tone of a flowmaster but Dynomax, borla, pypes, and some others flow very good!! Look for what he wants it to sound like, then start looking at the flow characteristics of each muffler. Pick the one with the best numbers and sound.

a lot of people seem to be happy with the sound of the magnaflow systems. good quality stuff, al stainless so it won't rust out, and the 3.5" slash cuts look very cool sticking out the back of a 4th gen.

IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT I WOULD RECCOMEND BORLA, ALSO YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER THIS.

Pacesetter headers & TSP true duals...should run you ~$800 for everything whereas some catbacks out there can run you that amount.

Check this http://www.pypesexhaust.com/ They are local, sound great, and beat flowmaster's flow numbers. I know a VERY tircked out 1st gen that has this on a sbc, and it sounds killa!!!!!!!

For a simple cat back, cant beat the sound and price of Magnaflow. Talk to the Exhaustguys, they are a memeber here and they sell Magnaflow. They have given several members a discount. I know Im going to them for my 72.

I've heard the spintech exhaust on a worked 2000 SS and it sounded beautiful . Plus not a lot of people run them, so it would sound very unique. My vote is for spintech

Stay far away from blowmasters with the LS1. It may sound great but it actually hurts performance on the LS1.

A lot of people like the magnaflow. I like the sound. I personally like the sound of the SLP dual/dual but I'm biased . Nice and quiet at idle and sounds nice and deep at WOT. The loudmouth is good however if your buddy decides to go with headers and no cat the loudmouth turns into a rasp machine and sounds like TOTAL ****. It'd be unbearable.

If you or him want real world experience and actual sound clips check out www.ls1sounds.com That will give him a good idea on what catbacks sound good on stock cars and also modded ones. He needs to know what he plans in the future so he can buy the right exhaust. Do it once, do it right.

4" exhuast is probably overkill. i wouldnt go over 3" and plan on getting dynomax ultraflows for my car. they flow better then flowmasters and are a little bit quiter.
