generally turbos are universal based on the displacement of the engine. which means this turbo should work with a 305. other factors are involved but it will work

Well, you are on the right track. Engine displacement isn't the only factor in choosing a turbo, but it is a factor. A smaller turbo will spool faster than a larger one, however the larger one has more top-end capability because it can move more air. You'll need to choose the turbo to suit your particular setup, not just based on the size of the motor.
