Poll on my car.

Well as you all know Im trying to do a cam, headers and intake (and other small goodys) on my car, and recently ive been thinking about how hot my car would look with a few things. I will still be installing the headers and cut out, but should I install the cam as well? I allready plan on returnin my nitrous, and selling my intake, I really dont want to put to much money into the 305..but I dont want to get made fun of by all the 350'ers any more. I know all of you are like, what are you gonna do to get your "fast talkin" well If it all works out I will have a 4th gen to DD when I get my liscence..should I get the ram air hood and put on the stockers or say screw the ram air hood and get z06's??? I need a job

Matt

PS Post i here since their is WAY to many different options.

here is my vision for your car:

leave the body and rims alone. maybe get a power bulge hood, but thats about it.

get the cam and headers installed

and thats it, thats how it should be.

I agree with Ian, but also get...
85-90 firebird/formula bumpers
85-92 firebird taillights
91-92 aero wing
lowering springs

Then in a few years, think about a 350 swap.

edit: this is the front bumper im talking about....

Listen. Get the whole LG4 outta your head... all your really doing is wasting money. Instead of blowing $$dollars on that LG4 that will get you probably nowhere even with cam, think about saving up for either a 305TPI (if you prefer shutting up 350 guys with a smaller motor) or just go with a 350. You have 3 years until you drive. 3 years is a VERY VERY long time to do some work, its not like your taking it to the track anytime soon. You need to be focused on 1 thing, and thats whatever you wanna go with. I was in your shoes when I had my 86 TA ... I was all talk on dropping a 383 stroker in there, and when I got around to redoing the body, I saw rust and sold it. Its basically the same thing here... you wanna do internal work in a very tired 305 but when all your hard work is done, its just gonna blow up, especially with nitrous. External wise... all you really gotta do is subframe connectors, lowering springs, and maybe some other small suspension components. Rims can stay, hood can stay, and paint can stay. Sleepers are alot nicer IMO.

BUT... if I was in your shoes, that car would've been fixed up a little better, sold, and been working on a 4th or 5th one by now, until I got enough money for a car in immaculate condition.

IMO, stop talking about your next car if you plan on doing anything more to this one. There is no point in modding this one any further if you are just going to sell it. You are 14 and you have a V8 Firebird. Install the cam, intake, and headers. Then carefully plan out what your goals are for the rest of the car before buying or selling any more parts. Don't worry about trying to keep up with anyone, because you can't for the next two and a half years. Having a crazy fast car won't do you any good right now because you can't drive it. What fun is a 10, 11, or 12 second beast if you can't drive it?

I know it's hard at your age, but you really need to come up with a plan for what you want to do with this car BEFORE you buy or sell anything else. Otherwise you are just wasting money.

Why not leave the engine be, and do external things that will work with a 350, like the exhaust, suspension, cooling, etc.

I don't know exactly what you have/need, because you have posted so many different things my head hurts.

if you plan on buying a 4th gen that will beat your head/cam/intake 305, why keep the 3rd gen at all?

and btw, do you realize what insurance will be on TWO sportscars at 17 years old? have fun going to school and paying for everything

So when are the 19s getting sold?

Matt, I dunno how to vote on this... while I see what people say about the 305 being a waste, esp. the LG4, I have heard so many times that doing anything on a V6 is a waste... and just basically said F you. However since a 350 is such a direct swap if I were in your shoes id probably do stuff ont he 305 tht can be transferred to a 350 and swap them eventually... and by eventually i mean when youre 18 or 19.

Stick with the stocker 3rd gen. Don't put any more money into than you have to, to keep it running. It's screaming "daily driver" to me, so keep it that way. You are young, have no job, and really need to worry about school while having fun on the side - not dropping tons of money into something you can't even drive yet.

Here's a suggested plan:

Buy the items you need - over the next three years - to get the car running just fine. Rust removal, a few cosmetic changes maybe, but stick to whatever you need to make it safe and reliable. Enjoy the Firebird for what it is, not what it could be on a track or racing some schmuck from a red light. You don't need that kind of expense and trouble right now with the insurance the way it is in this state.

Next, at age 15, apply to work as a parts monkey in a parts store or warehouse. You aren't looking for a glamorous job - you are looking for experience, a chance to pick up the lingo, and learn more about cars from the stories you'll hear from fellow workers and customers. Work this job for two years until you can drive. Working at a parts store might get you discounts or the occasional freebie.

By the time you are ready to drive, you will have money, parts, and a better understanding of what it means to cruise and what it means to race. Depending on your other interests, cruising might be your best option - costs less and gives you more time to enjoy other things.

Yeah, sorry to be the rolled newspaper of reality to the nose, but bring the dreams a little closer to reality so that you can actually attain them. You have the rest of your life ahead of you to own multiple cars, race faster than the space shuttle, and be the object of affection by blond race circuit women everywhere.
