I think Tsar owned one at some point... and in my opinion, DSM's are the easiest and cheapest to mod and make 11 second cars.

plug changes would be pretty easy considering they go in through the top of the head.

yeah theyre pretty easy to work on. respond well to mods as well. common problems are timing belt - CHANGE IT EVERY 60K! transmissions, the first gens had problems with the synchros, making it grind the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts usually. general maintenance stuff is easy to do. other than that stuff they are actually fairly reliable if you take care of it.

oh and get a 1g. 90-92 6 bolt motor FTW, the later years have the 7 bolt which makes more power but can crankwalk.

3" turboback exhaust
2g ported exhaust manifold
all the free mods
manual boost controller (and supporting fuel mods)

and youll be running pretty quick. Also see if you can find a 92 with the 4 bolt rear, 90-early 92 have the weaker 3 bolt. very hard to find a 6 bolt motor/4 bolt rear combo car.

in years that ive been arounf DSM i've yet to meet ONE person who had an actually crankwalk... but hey i hear on the interweb its quite the problem. Ohh BTW crankwalk is not dsm only thing, sure it happens in 2gs 7bolt more of then then not but even almighty MKIV has that problem.

Um...what gen dsm are u gonna buy? they are easy to work on, certainly much better then an LT1 especially when it comes to plugs. it will take you like a whooping <2 minutes to change them. 6bolt engine and 4 bolt rear seems to be the favorite among the peeps but they come pre 92.5 in a package that is. u can of course find them separate. If some one claims that they have a 6 bolt there's an easy way to check, look under the car and see if the oil pan is indented on the side its not a 6 bolt...

As far as tranny goes, if u beat on it it will break especially AWD . easy but expensive solution is Shep tanny. Mods are pretty easy to do if you have half a brain. DSM own all. thats it.

ohh and ill give another at the crankwalk peeps

before my bro got rid of his car i read a lot about them overcoming the crank walk issues by eliminating the counter shafts. something about they were trying to turn more mass than the bearings were capable of centering against.

basic maintenance isn't too bad on them. everything is pretty much within reach. doing clutches on AWD cars is a gigantic pain in the ass and rather pricey to have a shop do because of the time invovled.

i had a first gen TSI AWD not to long ago, had a few minor belt issues when i first got it which were later resolved with the help of GP99GT.

also i let this kid drive it once, he over reved it a few times and bent the valves cuz hes an effing idiot. my auto shop class and i took about 2 months and 300 bucks but we finally got her running again.

the engine had about 30k give or take a few thousand and ran really good, the body had 173,xxx and i never had to replace anything body wise...except for a few PS/WP belts .

the trans wasnt great, but then again i wasnt the best 5spd driver either. overall it was a good car and decently easy to work on, i guess thats one of the advantages to DOHC.

i bought a turbo back buschur racing exhaust off of NJSPEEDER which

edit: my avatar says R.I.P cuz it got hit by a truck

yeah the alternator is the tensioner basically cause it has seperate belts for each accessory. and its a bitch to tension the belt but of course every time we were wrenching on it it was like 45 degrees and dark outside

and yeah dont over-rev it. interference motor FTL

edit: and oh yeah, shanes car hung with a stock LS1 trans am (automatic) up to about 80mph. all shane had was a turboback exhaust and free mods
