There are several people here at work that actually go out and sit in their cars at lunch time and run it with the AC on for30-50 minutes! This is a perfect example of why we will have a serious energy crisis. And every house in my neighborhood has the AC on and running 24 hours a day, except us, we haven't turned the AC on yet this year. Our gas and electric bill for June was $105 and we used the exact same amount of electricity as last June. People in this country are addicted to AC!

I dont sit in the car at idle though. I've got better tunes on my laptop at work, and the AC is paid for by the company.

i can't deal with sitting in my house at 90 degrees sorry but I'm one of those people who runs the ac all day long so when I get home I'm comfortable.

Electricity isn't that expensive. It's the gas heating bill that kills me.

I turn off my a/c at home during the day...my livingroom actually stays pretty cool...when i go home I throw on the downstairs AC though...and yes heating the house is going to get super expensive...it already is really...i just put in 150 gal the other day and that was like $350 and would only last about a month during the winter...gonna be fun this year round

A large percentage of our electricity is produced using natural gas and the price on that keeps going up as the supply has dropped. When I was a kid most houses did not have AC and it was no big deal. But as a society we have turned into sponges that can't live without certain comforts. Would you rather live with no AC in the summer or no heat in the winter? It's easy to turn on a fan to cool down, but most people don't want to light a bonfire in their living room to stay warm. The people sitting in a running car is just ridiculous, especially considering we have AC here at work. My June gas and electric bill is $107 and $57 of that is for electric. If I turn on my vintage central air(1974) my electric bill will easily triple or quadruple. But I still can't justify it since I'm hardly ever in the house. I just find it scary how many people can't live without AC nowadays.

My AC stays on all day, but my mom runs a daycare out of our house, so putting up with hot cranky 2 year olds wouldn't be fun. Plus one of the kids has a seizure disorder that can be trigged by heat.

I keep the AC in the basement turned down low while I'm at work...rarely use AC in the car though.

just wondering how old you are? I've noticed older people tend to deal with the heat better then younger people. I for one am like a friggin sweat monster if it's above 70 degrees out. It doesn't matter if I'm just sitting there or running around I sweat which is very uncomfortable. A fan doesn't do anything but blow hot air at you.

Yup, 40 and I still sweat just as much as you young kids, in fact I sweat more now than I did 10 years ago. Yesterday I mowed the back yard, then went up the river and scrubbed down the inside of my boat sweating a ton, then put the lower steps back in to the dock(they weigh a ton). I came home, showered and opened the windows to let the air blow through. It was nice last night, no need for AC. Right now it's 79 degrees in my house(I'm home right now) and it's fine. It will heat up to 85 by around 5-6 but then I open the windows to let the air go through. The problem is that kids have been growing up inside the AC for 15-20 years now and they can't deal with the heat. That is going to cause a health crisis too. I realize some people have health issues and need AC, but to hear everyone say they can't live without it is downright scary. AC at work is needed with computers and people being dressed up. But you can't find any children playing outside anymore during the summer. I know that modern AC is more efficient, but that's way outside my budget and I still wouldn't turn it on since I'm not in the house until 8-9 pm most nights. I realize that I choose not to waste energy but like I said, it's scary how many people can't live without it.

I'm not far behind i'm 30, but I grew up with A/C from like april through nov. my dad hates the heat. I ended up being the same way. i can't even drive with the windows down in my car on hot days unless it's a weekend and I'm going someplace to just hang out. During the week when i'm working I can't do it. Not to mention driving with the windows down is no more efficient on the gas mileage then using the ac.

I look at it as a comfort and convenience thing. why should I sweat when i can click on the little white box and walk into a nice cool house. Like I said before gas is very expensive but the actual use of electricity isn't so until it gets cold out an the fiance complains about it being too cold I'm running the ac as much as I can.

I guess I'm one of those scary people who can't live without it.

I sat in my truck yesterday with the A/C on.... idling in the parking lot for lunch... so I could listen to Howard Stern! I don't pay the gas on company vehicles.

My personal vehicle.... F that! I ain't idling it and wasting gas!

the thermostat in my house automatically shuts off the AC in m house between midnight and like 6am. we dont know how to change it but we are tropical peoples anyway so we are used to 130 degree heat

HaHa, I wish I was a hippy. Then I would be on drugs all the time and chillin out. I just got back from playing volleyball from 6-8:30. Man, not an ounce of a breeze blowing and I think I sweated out 5 lbs. I'll wait until we have 3-4 days of 95 degrees in a row before I turn on the AC. You guys need to get outside more often to get used to the heat/humidity. If you think 70 degrees is hot, you might have some real health issues and need to get it checked out before you have a heart attack or stroke. I'm not kidding about that. I just had a relative that had a heart arithmia(sp?) and he's a very tall, thin guy. It stunned us all. My brother and I are very active with things like volleyball, biking, golfing, roller blading, mowing the lawn, etc. You need to stay physical to stay healthy. But don't over do it if you're not used to it. Noah's probably in the best shape with the work he does outside. Time for a and dinner!

yeah are a/c is on NEVER, because it doesnt work, O well If Im home and inside Im sitting on my ass. If its that hot out Ill wash the cars or mowe the lawn. I work out side all day it bothers me a bit, But since I started working I lost like 10 pounds...plus im actually getting paid.

My AC works in the house, in the car and in the truck. But here's a kicker for you guys, one of the guys playing volleyball with us is 76 and he was out there tonight diving in the sand like everyone else. Then when we were done he was complaining because his mother who is 104 was giving him a hard time the other day! Think any of us will make it to 104! Man, I sure hope I don't!
