something interesting i found out tonight...
well, tonight i was doing some surfing on LS1tech and randomly came across a thread about how some 01 & 02 f bodies supposedly got a true LS6 block instead of the '168 ls1 block. They were going back and forth about what are the real differences. so all that got me thinking, did they really do that and how could you tell. I searched the web for the answer. First off most people said theres a "bulls-eye" casting on the passenger side of the block in front of the head ONLY on LS1 blocks, and nothign on LS6(but some people say a few ls1s didnt have it either), then some say the "coloring" of the block, and then the LS6 blocks had the bay-to-bay "windows under the cylinders, thats the best way to determine it, so with all that going around in my head, i couldnt resist to look at some pics i took of my old block, when i disassembled it and right before i took it the the metal recycler for scrap value. Well, low and behold, it was a true LS6 block that was originally in my SS... oh well, life goes on, but i guess i now know for sure that GM did use the LS6 blocks in the f bodies..

no, they didnt come with the 243 heads, some say a FEW did but none proven, ls1 heads for 01-02 are 241 castings.
and the block had a hole in it so it didnt really matter, but now i sorta wish even more that it didnt blow up in the first place.
in one picture i have, you can see the missing "bulls-eye" mark, and in this attached pic, you can clearly see the "bay-to-bay" windows above the mains....

So.... I have "LS1" on my car for nothing?! LMAO I did this search 2 days ago and came up with nothing. There was a discussion about it and made me think for a loooong time.
Reason being, Ive seen alot of ppl with "LS6's" instead of "LS1's" in their sig and stuff, all 2001 + 2002 models... so I was wondering if I'm missing something...

Noah, well, look on your block right in front of the passenger side head, if theres a raised round pedestal/bump, then its just an LS1, its its flat, then most likely its a LS6

thats most likely it, me and my dad always talk about this. a TA/WS6 or Z28/SS could compete easily with a vette for alot less since the have the same engine (well the older vettes do) theyre mostly the same arent they??

There is no difference or any hp gains you will get by going to it. The LS6 block was made in Mexico, the LS1 block was made in Canada. The LS6 used a different process on casting the block to make it stronger. The Mexican plant used to produce the same LS1 style block Canada did, but once they were told to make the LS6 block, some were sent to the Fbody plant.
In 2001, about 15% of the Fbodies out there have an LS6 block, and by 2002, up to 25% of the Fbodies have the LS6 block.
In 2003, the Canadian plant went to the LS6 design and casting process, so by then, they were all LS6 blocks.
The LS2 has taken most of the technology learned by the Gen III engines and pushes them to the next level, so on with the LS7.

Corrected. Fuel delivery method is irrelevant.

Would it be better? Well, the engine provided better internal breathing so I would say that I would rather have an LS6 block over the LS1.

lol, well its still a ls1, the ls6 is really made that by the cam and heads. Some people claim a few LS1 blocks didnt have that mark either, but it does seem to be the largest external difference, The only way to be 100% positive it to pull the pan and check for the bay-to bay "windows" under the cylinders.
Just in 01-02 all ls1's got the LS6 intake manifold, and M6s got the LS6 clutch.
my last 6 digits are 108716, maybe ours were side by side, lol

Yea it just didnt make sense to me... cuz me and Brian (np 00 ta) had the same mods done to our cars, both A4's, same launches, and I was cutting 13.31 and he was cutting 13.7/13.8 .

Thats cause Camaro's are always faster.
An LS6 block is not going to give you hp, and not gunna be the cause of the gap between you two.
Its not an LS6, its still an LS1. LS6 has a different cam, heads and tune.
In related news, I think that GM should have grew a set and put the LS6 in select Camaros for a final hoo-rah, but I guess that was never gunna happen.

Ahhh for the pure enjoyment and torture of Camaro enthusiast, GM tops new camaro by installing an LG4 in select few. 18.6 1/4mile times FTL

Yea, these days most people assume that you have fuel injection unless you specifically say carb. That's why FI stands for Forced Induction more often than not....
